Me

Whenever I play songs on my guitar it sounds too choppy. How can I make myself sound smoother while I play? And how can i play faster? Is there anything that could help apart from just practicing? Or is there anything specific I should play?

Answer
If you haven't learned hammer-ons and pull-offs yet, that's probably what you're looking for.

I'll try to give a quick example...

Pick your high E string open. (the string closest to the floor as the guitar sits on your lap..your thinnest string)

Then immediately, before the open E note decays, hammer on with your second finger at the 3rd fret,

Next...pull your finger off that 3rd fret to sound the open E note again.

In effect, you're only picking the string once, but you're getting 3 notes...the picked note, the hmmer-on at the 3rd fret, and the pull-off to the open note again.

this is the all time great faker lick for guitar. It's incredibly easy to play, and you can build up a lot of speed with this lick.

Next..do the same thing on the second string..pick it open, then hammer on at the 3rd fret, then pull your finger off the 3rd fret to sound the open second string.

Combine this lick. Do the 3 notes on the 1st string then go right into the 3 notes on the second string.

Try to give it a triplet feel. Counted as one triplet, two tripet, 3 triplet. The picked open E (or B) is done on the "one," the 'trip' is done on the hammer on, and the "let" is done on the pull-off.

Once you're comfortable with this, do the same thing on your 3rd string..only hammer and pull off at the 2nd fret.

Then go to the 4th string, and once again, hammer and pull off at the 2nd fret.

Resolve to an Em chord, or a G chord...both work.

To gain speed and move away from that choppy sound, you have to use hammer-ons and pull-offs.

Remember...you do not have to physically pick every single note.

Best of luck and keep pickin' till those fingers bleed!
