which guitar loop pedal should i get?

Me

I'm looking for a cheap guitar loop pedal any recommendations?

Answer
Well, we all have different ideas of cheap... These units tend to cost a little bit more than say your average stomp box effect.

Any how, you can compare features and approx. prices for the more popular and common models here: http://www.sweetwater.com/cs--Loop_Pedals

Which one you may be comfortable with is totally up to you. The "cheaper" ones have less features and less loop/recording time.

I recently bought a Digitech Jamman loop pedal for guitar, not the newest on the market, but the cheapest nonetheless. It's not arrived yet, but I'm curious about how it actually works.

My basic question is: do you need an effects board, or some kind of signal splitter with it? Or can you plug it into your guitar and amp, and go? I'm so confused, please help.
Generally, what do you plug it into? What technical requirements are there?

Answer
I looked at the manual on their website, and you simply plug the guitar into the pedal, and that in the amp. Have fun Jamming!

I've been playing the guitar for a while now, and I'd like to buy a loop pedal. I was just wondering what features a loop pedal should have, and what features are just extras?
Thanks in advance :)

Answer
Most people look for the ability to save loops. I'm not that big into saving loops, as i would prefer to loop what i just played. Another loop feature is the ability to play two (or more) loops at once. Some loopers also have added effects like delay, but I am not sure how good they would be.

I want to get a looping pedal for my guitar (something that I can press down, play some chords, and then it plays them back over and over again so I can play over them). Im looking at guitar center, but I'm not sure what the best brand and what exactly I should be looking for in one. Basically, please give me advice on a brand, where to get it, how much it should cost, and what specs it should have.
Thanks!

Answer
Dude, if you can afford it the Line 6 JM4 is incredible. It is expensive, $329 but calling it a looper is a slap in the face. I bought mine at GC. It is basically just the brains out of the Spider Jam. Obviously you can loop, but it also has hundreds of great models and hundreds of drum tracks, not drum machine crap, but actual drummers like Carmine Appice, Jason Bonham, etc. laying down killer grooves to play chord progressions over. It also has hundreds of full jam tracks to play lead over. Whether you are looping or playing with drum/jam tracks you can record and over-dub right on the JM4. You can save 24 minutes of CD quality recording to the on-board memory or add a 2 GB SD card and get over 6 hours of recording. You can then transfer to your PC via SD and burn your recordings to CD. There are also inputs for bass/keyboard and an XLR input for a vocal mic. You can basically do everything from this one piece of equipment. A little expensive compared to a regular loop station, but is by far the coolest and most helpful thing I have ever purchased concerning guitar. If you just want a basic Loop Station get the Boss RC-2 but for another $140 you get the some of the best musicians in the world as your personal jam band and full recording capabilities.

Is anyone gamiliar with how to use a loop pedal. Should I get the Boss R20 or the Digitech Jam Man? I see KT Tunstall use them all the time, and it's inspired me to try the one-man-band style.

Answer
No way, don't go with the Jam Man. I've been using loop stations for the last 3 years.

I got the Jam Man when it first came out. And it's not good. There is a slight delay with recording. That is, it doesn't stop / start right when you hit the pedal, there's like a .0003 mm sec delay.

KT Tunstall uses the Head Rush pedal, which is cool, but it doesn't have as many capabilities as Boss.

The DL4 by Line 6 is cool. But it's primary purpose is the delay effect, so again not as many options as the Boss pedals.

I'd recommend the Boss RC-50. Although It's $500. It is incredible when it comes to looping. It's basically 3 loop stations in one. You can record, overdub, undo, add drum beats, connect midi, run mic and guitar, fade in and fade out on different phases, control inputs / outputs, etc. The thing is loaded.

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/RC50/

If you can't afford that. Then go with the Boss RC20-XL. The RC20 doesn't have undo. Which is a terrible thing not to have when practicing. The 20XL has all the features of the 50, but it doesn't have 3 separate phrases. But you still got all the essentials of Undo, Record, Drum Beats, Microphone In, etc.

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/RC20XL/

The Boss DD-20 also has loopin capabilities. But again the main purpose is a delay effect, so the looping is limited. No undo, no fade in or fade out, etc.

If you like KT Tunstall, check out Howie Day's earlier stuff. He was the man at looping. Watch Ghost Live on YouTube.

Can the Bass effects pedal be used as a Guitar loop Station?

Hi, I have this Bass effects pedal and I am kinda lost in figuring it out, but all I really want to do is use it as a Guitar loop station, is there anyway that this is possible?

Answer
Does the pedal have a loop feature?

If it doesn't, then I think the answer is pretty obvious.

There's no significant difference between the electrical signal generated by a bass and by a guitar. Guitar and bass pedals can be used interchangeably, however, they are designed specifically to enhance either instrument. Using guitar pedals on a bass and vice versa typically sounds awful.
