Q. I have a 15 fender amp with distortion channel, gain, treble, Bass, Presence, middle and of course a volume knob. I know I have the tunning right for crazy train, but i doesn't sound right.

Answer
That's not a Black Sabbath song. Tony Iommi's tone from Sabbath and Randy Rhodes' tone from Ozzy's solo stuff are 2 very different animals. Since you asked about "Crazy Train", we'll talk about Randy's.

The guitar sound on "Crazy Train" is a combination of an MXR Distortion+ pedal, MXR Graphic EQ set to a fairly substantial mid boost, mid 70's Marshall Super Lead amps, and Marshall cabinets loaded with Altec speakers.

Another major part of that sound is the fact that Randy Rhodes would triple-track all of his parts....that's going to be tough to replicate no matter what equipment you have (unless you have multiple amps and modulated delays).

I hate to directly contradict another post, but the "turn everything to 11 except the mids" is absolutely wrong. That tone had a lot of midrange in it. The Les Paul the song was cut with also had a lot of highs in it that come through on the record.

Turn the gain up just so you get the sustain you need. Put the mids up quite a bit, the highs at maybe 5 or 6, and the bass at 4 to 5.

Of course, these are just guesses, since you didn't say what kind of guitar you use (and that's a huge component in the sound).

It's very, very difficult to duplicate a studio recording live, as there is usually a lot of effects added during the mixdown process. The important thing is just to get in the ballpark of the sound, and work on the feel of the tune. That's how you sell it!
