What's the best cheap guitar effects to buy?

I'm planning to save up for guitar effects but the big ones are so expensive. I've held such like the gt-8 and I really liked it. I don't have much money so I'm planning to buy the single pedals one by one. Any advice? I wish to know which ped to start with. I play experimental rock, post-hardcore or maybe jazz-fusion. Thanks!

Hello there,

A good basic distortion pedal should probably be your first pedal. The Boss DS-1 is a decent distortion pedal that does not cost an arm and a leg.

A good basic distortion pedal should probably be your first pedal. The Boss DS-1 is a decent distortion pedal that does not cost an arm and a leg.

What can guitar effects switchers be used for?

I understand that a guitar effects switcher can help to better organize your pedals and your use of them. What else can they do?

I am running under the impression that they can also:

1) Be used to run pedals in different combos without having to unplug and replug pedals from one combo to another

2) Turn pedals on and off without having to stomp on each pedal individually

What else are they used for?

There are several features that these units offer. They usually have a universal power supply that can power several different pedals. They allow you to select any or all pedals with one switch. Each switch (patch) has an independent volume control allowing you to have one patch be louder or softer than another (great for having a lead boost). The ability to run to more than one amp so you can set up a stereo image. The ability to set up an external loop for rack mounted gear. Some have MIDI capability. Most have a buffered input and output to normalize the signal to match your amps input and effects send and returns.
Remember that some units are very basic and only offer a few of these features, whereas some are more complex and offer all this and more. Do your home work, decide what you need, and make your decision accordingly

How to I make a guitar effect that sounds like a steel string guitar?

Ok I know how to play "daughters" but John Mayer but the beginning part where the steel string guitar plays is awesome and I cant find any effects on my guitar effects that sounds like it.

Btw, I dont even know how to make my own effects..

If this helps at all I have Digitech RP80 guitar effects.

The steel guitar effect is done with a bottleneck or guitar slide (metal or glass) that you slip in your ring or pinky finger. This way, you can still play a riff with the other fingers and use the slide over the string which gives it the exact sound of a steel guitar.
That's what he is using in that lead part.

What would be the essentials to have for guitar effects? And what are the best kinds?

I'd say a delay pedal, wah pedal, distortion, etc are all musts. What are the essential guitar effects to have and what are the best kinds?

I have an MXR carbon copy delay, Vox wah v865? MXR Distortion pedal, and ummm that's it.

I use separate stomp boxes..I don't care for the multi effects pedals.

My line up..in this order is....

MXR Dyna Comp
MXR Distortion +
Ibanez Tube Screamer
Boss Chorus
Boss Tremelo
Boss Digital Delay

I love Wah wahs..as long as their not over done...mainly because they're a great tone generator...you don't have to step on them all the time.

My old pots wah wah has gotten a bit nosiy lately, so I haven't been using it...but it should be first in any chain.

The overdrive and distortion pedals should usually be after your wah wah, followed by the time delay devices..like choruses, delays, tremelo's etc..., at the end of your chain.

If I could only have one pedal..it would be a tube screamer...followed by a delay, or reverb...IMHO.

Or course, the best effect, is practicing till your fingers bleed!!

I'm somewhat of a beginner with guitar and I want to start using some guitar effects. What's the full list of things I need?
Well I like to play indie and alternative rock stuff. I hope that helps a bit.

You would need a few pages to pack in all you can buy. There are literally dozens of effect pedals and it depends what you are trying to play. Do you like heavy metal, blues, indie rock. I suggest you go to your nearest music shop, take your guitar and ask can you try a few pedals. Wah is an old favourite and distortion is a good standard. Try things out and see what you like. God luck and remember there are only three ways to become a great guitarist. Practice practise and practise some more. Good Luck
