How do you set up a Guitar effects pedal?

and I have never used a guitar effects pedal before and I wanted to know how to set it up because I don't want to buy it and find out that my amp cant use it or something like that.

All amps can use a pedal, and if u buy it don't forget another cord (just like the one for plugging the guitar to the amp.) All you do is plug one cable from the amp to the jack labeled LEFT of the effect and the other cable from the guitar to the jack labeled INPUT. The button is only for switching between whether you're going to plug into a mixer or amp and seeing as you're a beginner, you should leave it out rather than in, unless you are connecting it to a mixer, which I doubt. Everything about how to use it will probably be included in the instructions. The other two jacks are for headphones and an alternate power source, which may or may not be included. If not, it will require batteries.

I am getting a new guitar and either a new amp or effects pedal. For now i will mostly be using it for guitar covers and i see that alot of people use multi effects pedals. How do they work, can i plug it into my amp (fender 15w frontman) and/or my computer? or should i get an amp? most likely a 30w marshall, vox or line 6

They basically work the same as any other single effect pedal. The latest ones (Pod HD500, Digitech RP1000 for eg), also come with amp modelling software, along with a massive amount of effects. You will find that ultimately you will only use a few of them, but the choice is yours.
They are all digital, but some are powered by tubes (Vox). I dont think this makes a huge difference in sound.
I use the digitech Rp500 through a fender twin (tube amp), and it sounds great. The big bonus with this pedal is the ability to turn off the modelling, and just let the rp500 work as a pedal board. Classic effects like Univibe, Chorus, Fuzz, etc.. all sound fantastic.
You can run most of them through a computer for recording, etc..

hi, i was wandering which guitar multi effect pedal to go for. i like the look of the zoom g2 which i can buy for £85, and the line 6 floor pod plus for about £90. can anyone help me decide which one to go for, or if any others are better? ( in the price range )

I recommend checking out the Boss ME-20, the Digitech RP-150, Digitech RP-350, Digitech RP90...in fact the whole RP series from digitech is good.

Would a guitar multi effects pedal or bass multi effects pedal be more useful for both guitar and bass?

My main instrument is bass, but i also play a little guitar. I was looking into a multi effects pedal, but do not have enough money for both a guitar one and a bass one. Would it be more wise to buy a guitar multi effects pedal for guitar and bass, or a bass effects pedal for guitar and bass? Which would sound less out of place on it's non recommended instrument?

I wouldn't get a MFX pedal unless I was gonna drop 500 bucks on the Line 6 POD HD series. The rest of them sound like garbage.

well, i'm planning to buy a guitar multi-effect pedal,i would pay about 120$,
I quite like Line6 pedals but they are rather expensive!
my guitar is noisy so i want it with a good noise gate,
and i will use it to record some of my songs.
i heard that ZOOM effect pedal noise gates are not that good,
what do you suggest me to buy?

A Zoom is about the cheapest you'll get. Anything else will be 50% or more expensive. Might be worth investigating why your guitar is noisy (dirty pots, bad earthing etc.) before you go looking for a pedal to gate the symptom rather than cure the cause. Changing all the pots on your guitar would only cost $10 for parts (assuming 3 pots) and maybe a few bucks for a can of switch cleaner for the pickup switch.

Is it possible to plug in my single guitar effects pedals into a multi-effects pedal?

A bit of a stupid question, but I'm looking into purchasing the Line 6 Pod X3 Pro multi-effects processor, but enjoy the sounds of my single-effects guitar pedals I have that the Pod does not include. Considering I've never seen someone do it, is it possible to plug these other effects into the effects loop outside of the multi-effects pedal? Thank you.

Of course you can. Think about it: the amp is designed to accept the signal from the guitar. That means that any sort of effect you put in front of the amp should be outputting the same sort of signal as your guitar. So everything is all the same in front of the amp, no need to worry about messing anything up.

Making it sound good is another story altogether. You wouldn't want to stick a delay in front of a distortion pedal, or a stick a phaser behind a reverb... it will just sound bad. Multi-effects units don't usually allow you to alter or control the signal chain, they usually have all the effects sorted into categories and chain them a very specific (and nice sounding way). That's why you don't ever see people doing it.

As convenient as multi-effects are, they rarely ever sound as good as a dedicated effect unit. Dedicated effects also allow you the freedom to chain them however you want. You have to know a little more about signal chaining and how those effects work in order to get a good sound, but you can get much nicer tones in general out of good single pedals.
