How do you put on nylon strings on an acoustic guitar?

grf_93

i have an acoustic guitar but i've bought nylon strings for the beginning lessons, these strings don't have an "end ball" at one end and i don't know hou tu put them on

Answer
Acoustic guitars are built for either steel-strings or nylon strings.
Guitars built for use with nylon strings -also known as "classical" guitars- is the preferred instrument by players that concentrate in the "classical music" genre.- A lot of melody line rather than just chords.
Guitars built for use with steel strings are the preferred choice for "back-up" and primarily chord players.
Both types can be used to play ANY type of guitar music.
The above statement is only a matter of preference with individual players.

As for the strings - It is OK to use nylon-strings on an acoustic guitar built for steel strings.
You are giving up string pressure that will not affect the instrument but it will affect the "sound" projected.
Nylon strings are softer to play and a bit"mellower" than the "metal-like" sound of steel strings.
The volume will also will be lower overall.

The reverse is Not True for guitars built
for use with nylon strings.
NEVER put steel strings on a guitar built for nylon strings. They will not support the pressure of the steel strings.

If your guitar is built for steel string you could experiment using the nylon strings and see if you like the sound.
A few of my guitar player friends seem to like the "mellower" sound and use them in their "steel-strings" guitars.

Only you can decide what "sound" will be to your liking. No harm will be done to your steel-string guitar is you use the nylon strings.

As for setting up the no-ball-end strings, you could make your own end-knot on each string.
Just make sure that the knot is a little bit bigger that the hole on the bridge so that the string won't snap-thru when you are tunning the guitar.
Good Luck and enjoy your guitar playing

Answer
Assuming you have a classical guitar you need to use classical (nylon) strings. Do not use steel strings or you'll ruin your guitar. Putting them on is quite easy. Here are complete pictorial instructions:

Q. I play classical music, but on a steel string acoustic guitar. Other than a wider fretboard, how does a nylon string guitar compare to steel strings? Are there squeaks? Are they easier to control? Is it really quiet? Are the strings looser in feel?

Answer
You really should have a classical guitar if you're playing classical music. Nylon strings are softer and the tension is lower. (Many classical guitarists prefer high tension strings.) They are still squeaky. I have no idea what "easier to control" means.

The fretboard is not only wider but also flat, while a steel string guitar has a curved (called "radiused") fretboard. The classical guitar's fretboard meets the body at the 12th fret as opposed to the 14th fret on the typical steel string guitar. This gives you less access to the higher registers. The additional width of the fretboard results in a wider string spacing which takes some getting used to.

So, I am new at the buying a guitar. But I need an acoustic guitar with nylon strings. I am going to be needing this guitar for a class that I will be taking next year. I would like the price range to be 100-200 dollars.
So what are your suggestions?

Answer
Ibanez has good guitars that are still in that price range, I had bought an "Ibanez GA Series GA5 Classical Guitar" for $150 it's hasn't let me down.

I have a classical guitar with nylon strings, and I am wondering if I can use steel strings instead of nylon strings.

Answer
No, you'll destroy the guitar.

Steel strings have to be at a much higher tension to be at pitch, and classical guitars aren't designed to withstand that sort of force.

Your guitar will break in multiple places, if you're lucky.

A friend of mine told me that it would be easier for me to play chords on my guitar with nylon strings.

Answer
NO!!!!!!! there is approximately 600 psi of string tension on a steel stringed guitar trying to fold it in two. Resistance is BUILT into the guitar, if you go changing out to nylon strings, you'll drop that tension down to about 100 psi. It may work short term but TRUST ME, big trouble will lay ahead.
