How do I use my Guitar tuner?

I have a yamaha GCT1 clip on guitar tuner.

the problem is. it only has 5 modes. CGBV and U
when i play a string with a different mode on. it displays a different note. i do not understand how to use THIS tuner. i know how to use tuners. but this isnt making any sense

You set it for what instrument you have. It is automatic from there.

For a guitar, you set it to G.

Standard guitar tuning, top to bottom, is E, A ,D ,G ,B ,E.

I have an acoustic guitar and I'm new at it.
I'm trying to learn how to tune it half-step down.
And I know how.
You put a capo on the first fret.
Then tune it down to standard tuning.
But I don't know how.
So I need to know how much and how would I pick it?

Im sorry, everyone elses answers were either too far off base, or missed your question completely.

First off, you never tune a guitar with a capo on it and then remove the capo. Capo's can bend the strings and when you remove it, you can be out of tune already.

What you need is a chromatic tuner with a mic.

In the world of tuners, you do get what you pay for. I would suggest spending a decent amount of money on one and getting one that has both a mic, and you can plug an electric guitar into and then an output, so if you run it in an effects chain you don't need to unplug. Ones that take a 9v adapter in addition to a battery are excellent. Also, get one that lights up. They have basic black and grey LCD ones, some have a needle, but get one that lights up. If you ever are trying to tune in the dark (stage, campfire, bedroom, whatever) that will be a huge asset to you.

However, like you said, you are new at this. So, if that price tag is too big for you, get yourself a chromatic tuner with a mic and at least 1 input. Roland/Boss and Peterson make excellent tuners. They also have tuners that clip onto your headstock.

What's the best advanced tuner for acoustic guitar?

Right now all I have is my QuikTune that I use when I'm moving around wth my guitar, because my old one broke.
I'm looking for a more advanced and accurate tuner (not clip on), either digital or analog, that is very good for acoustic guitars.

It all depends on how much you are willing to spend.

You cannot find analog tuners now days without spending a few hundred dollars, so I only gave you some digital ones. The analog tuners were phased out when transistors came into use and the old crystal tuners were too costly to use.

For $20-30, you can get a Korg GA-20 (made specifically for guitars) or a Korg CA-20 (chromatic, good for odd tunings). These are pretty nice. I use the CA-20 99% of the time.

Boss makes a couple good tuners as well. They have a chromatic model for $70 and a guitar/bass model for $90 http://www.guitarcenter.com/Boss-TU-12-CHROMATIC-TUNER-GUITAR-AND-BASS-105455596-i1437766.gc . These are nice, but pricey.

You can also find some nifty ones that hang on your wall like a picture..... These are hard to find though....

The more money you spend, the nicer the tuner (duh), but the cheap one's do the same thing.

By the way, any tuner that has a microphone will work well with any acoustic instrument.

Does Edward's Music Company offer free tuning and stringing for guitars?

No matter how much I string my guitar, the E1 string always breaks and I'm not sure whether the tuning is correct (even when I use online tuners). I don't wanna pay either for an electronic guitar tuner.

Next time you buy a set of strings, bring in your guitar and ask the guy at the music store to show you how to put them on correctly. And it sounds like using an online tuner isn't working for you, since you evidently can't hear when you're in tune with it and when your E1 string is tuned way too high. Do yourself a favor, spend the $15 or $20 and get yourself an electronic tuner that clips onto your guitar's headstock and tells you when you're in tune.

I tried to tune the guitar with an online tuner but that almost never seems to be accurate. Can someone please tell me the proper way to tune a guitar using a tuning fork?

Your question is "what is the easiest way to tune a guitar?" The answer is most definitely NOT to use a tuning fork. Spend $15 or $20 to get a good quality chromatic tuner and you'll have no trouble tuning your guitar. I've always had great luck with the Korg tuners. I recently gave mine to my daughter for her violin though, so I bought a Snark clip-on tuner. It works great for my acoustic guitar (just clip it on the headstock, turn it on, pluck a string and it senses the vibrations through the wood and tells you what pitch the string is tuned to. You can tune it up quite easily.

If your question really is "How do I tune my guitar using a tuning fork?", then it's probably tuned to A, so you'd strike it against something then tune your A string to the tone produced by the fork. Once you get the A in tune you tune the other strings relative to that using either the 5th fret or harmonics. If you don't already know what I'm talking about, then you need lessons and a chromatic tuner. Google "tuning guitar with tuning fork" and I'm sure you'll find all the help you need (with pictures and everything).
