Can you hook up a guitar distortion pedal to a keyboard?

Even though my keyboard comes with preset "overdriven guitar" I would like a true guitar sound. Could I use the regular acoustic guitar tone and then plug in a distortion pedal to achieve a "zeppelin" or "Sabbath" guitar sound? If the keyboard has its own speakers, how would I connect it? Do I need an amp? Or right into keyboard if even possible at all? If possible, any cheap distortion pedals you guys can recommend?

Answer
Hello there,

There are some problems in doing this. First physically, I assume your keyboard does not have a effects loop out and in jacks. So you are going to have to use a line out jack on your keyboard if it has one. Then run the cable to the pedal. From the pedal to an external amp.

Using the acoustic guitar tone run into a distortion pedal is not going to sound like an electric guitar run into a distortion pedal (like either LZ or BS). Another problem is that the distortion pedal works with single note riffs. If you play chords through it the sound gets mushy and blurred. So to use a distortion pedal with your keyboard, you are going to have play on the keyboard like a guitar player doing riffs.

Distortion pedals. Boss DS-1 is a good basic distortion that does not cost an arm and a leg.

Danelectro also makes some good inexpensive pedals.

You can find the older Danelectro pedals on eBay. I see used ones for for $10 or less.

Later,

Hello again,

here is a better demo of the DS-1
