How do you attach a guitar strap to the neck of a guitar?

not so fly

My acoustic guitar tends to rotate downward when it is played while standing. I've been told that you can stop this by connecting the strap to a shoelace around the neck and above the nut, rather than at the nob at the base of the neck.

The problem is that a shoelace would look lame/trashy with this particular guitar and strap. Any alternatives? Thanks.

So im new to the guitar world. So what kind of guitar should i get the price range under $200 or 300. And what other stuff should i get with the guitar.

Answer
Yamaha's are really good for beginners and affordable! They have great sound, and look great. Believe me, I own one! Some other stuff that you should get with the guitar is probably a tuner. I have a tuner and a Yamaha, that's basically what you need. But you'd always want extra strings but you might also want to see this.

Yamaha's are sold basically everywhere, and you can find them on this website.

Which electric acoustic guitar accessories should I buy?

Ok, so I have never played guitar and I am taking lessons this semester to learn. I've played bass for about 7 years now, and I know the ins and outs of that but guitar is a foreign concept. I've decided on buying a fender acoustic electric starcaster, but I need to know what kind of straps, cords, and strings people that actually play use. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Strings: D'addario strings, any of them but try to get 9 gauge like these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/DAddario-EJ1510-47-Phosphor-ACOUSTIC-Extra-Light/dp/B000EENC0C/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1326581900&sr=8-4

As for a strap, just get any old acoustic guitar strap for now.

You wont need anything yet though as your teacher will only be teaching you the basics. Just make sure you get a tuner and that your guitar has 6 strings :)

I want to learn to play the acoustic guitar - what are my options for buying an inexpensive package?

I would prefer a made in the USA guitar and the best deal I've found is a $200 Fender package. Maybe I just don't know how expensive guitars are, but that seems like alot to me. Any suggestions?

Answer
You can come in under $200, but you have to have a knowledgeable guitarist to help you.

First, figure out what brands you like. Go to a music store and fun around with some of the cheaper models. See if your left hand likes cradling the neck, if your left fingers reach the low-E string comfortably, if your right arm likes being draped over the neck.

Then, with your knowledgeable friend, try to find those guitars at:

http://www.shopgoodwill.com/
these are thrift-store quality, which in some cases means great and in other means trash. keep $50 or so back to take it to a shop for adjustment and re-stringing.

http://www.ebay.com/
see if you can get warranties here.

local pawn shops.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/
don't be afraid of their scratch-n-dent, and keep this website when you want strings or accessories.

local music stores that sell second-hand. again--get warranty.

You might come in under $100 for a workable used acoustic suitable for a beginner if you shop hard.

Can I put a pickup on my acoustic guitar?

My guitar is an acoustic guitar. Yep, just a plain ol' acoustic. Is it possible that I can put an acoustic pickup on it? Or does my guitar have to be acoustic-electric to use the pickup? Sorry, I'm a beginner.
Thanks in advance.

Answer
TommyMc did a fine job already but I'll add my 2 cents.

The easiest way is to put a magnetic sound hole pickup in the sound hole but that will not retain the acoustic quality of your guitar. It will make it sound like an electric guitar.

The most common and cheapest way to install a pickup that retains the acoustic sound is to install a piezoelectric element under the saddle. Some wiring is done inside the body of the guitar to attach the battery pack and preamp, and the end hole is bored out just enough to accept the output jack (which is attached to the preamp). You can expect to pay around $140 for the pickup with electronics and another $100 for the installation at your local music store. Here's a sample pickup:

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fishman-Matrix-Infinity-Acoustic-Guitar-Under-Saddle-Pickup?sku=309393

There are better - and more expensive - acoustic pickups available from companies like LR Baggs, PUTW, B-Band, McIntyre, Schertler, and others. However for most people the under-saddle piezo pickup is just fine.

I'm going to purchase an Epiphone Hummingbird. Sure, I do have enough cash to pay for a Gibson, but eh.. With that money I can buy an Epiphone and other guitar accessories.

Anyway, since I will be purchasing an acoustic guitar, how should I take care of it? What's this I hear about humidifiers?

Answer
yes that would be a good buy and tuner.keep the guitar clean any finger prints off with a treated
wipe cloth.keep in tune and in a case.when playing keep it on a stand.always wipe the strings after
playing to remove any oil.keep a extra set of strings in the case and any picks you like.
