Hey everyone! I've just been assigned a project in my college math class Survey Of Mathematics and i'm having lack of ideas. We can choose any topic as long as we can apply some sort of college level math to that topic. I would like to do it on guitars (any aspect i.e. guitar building, playing, writing, etc) but i can't think of anything. Could someone help me out please.

Answer
guitars have 5 strings and 6 frets?.. u can talk about the distance of your fingers to one another as you play the different notes... talk about the angle of the guitar to your lap... or the angle of your fingers to the strings to differentiate high versus low pitched-sounds.... you can also talk about the guitar being tangent to your lap as the best position... i honestly don't know how to play a guitar, but i guess you get my point already... i know a whole lot about math though.. good luck on your term paper... i think it's pretty creative to incorporate music in math!!!

What's different about a guitar with a "fast neck"?

How is the guitar built that so that they are easier to play fast on?

A popular feature of Ibanez and Schecter guitars. Might just be an advertising gimmick, but I don't think so...never played one of those guitar before, but I'd definetly like to but a Schecter in the future.

Answer
The frets are lower and some have little "dents"(?) inthe back to make it easier to find chord sequences without looking. They will likely have a very low action to them. They are easier to play because the strings and frets are lower but you have to spend more time maintaining it to avoid those annoying buzzes you get when the string vibrates on the next fret.

A high quality guitar will be built that way anyway, so it IS a bit of an advertising gimmick. Sorry, I've never played a Schecter so I can't comment on those.

P.S. Buy a Fender ;-)

I need good quality dried mahogany and various versions of maples for guitar building but don't know of any place in the area to get them. If anyone says "Home Depot" or "Lowes" or " do a Google search" I'll smack you... Thanks!

Answer
Call arroyo hardwoods in Pasadena, I know it's not orange county, but they are an old supplier and may know of somebody in your area, and if not they are not TOO terribly far from you.

Good luck!

Is there any way to cut the headstock off of a guitar neck and epoxy or otherwise attach one of your own?

I recently acquired a guitar neck that I plan to use on one of my own, however the headstock is awful and the tuners will not stay in tune. And so i was wondering if there was anyway to replace it with one of my own.

Note: while all helpful suggestions are welcome, I ask that all specific instructions only come from people who have experience with guitar building/.maintenance. Thank you.

Answer
Although it may technically be possible, I have never heard of anyone actually doing it. I have heard of repairing a cracked headstock, but not replacing a headstock.
If your tuners do not stay in tune, either replace your tuners, or check the bridge.

If you are interested in having a neck with a custom made headstock, you can make your own. Check the site below.
As for replacing the headstock... bad idea. Even if you went to a shop, it would cost you more than buying a new neck.
Get yourself some halfway decent tuning pegs and replace the ones you have. If you want, throw some paint on the headstock and make a design of your own... or sand it to bare wood and put some poly on it. Don't try cutting it... you might as well use it for firewood.

What is the best way to get investors capitol for my new business?

warfaregui

I am starting a new guitar company with a niche market(metal-heads) and have several guitar building innovations that will be going into the product. As well as progressive style, Warfare Stringed Instruments will boast:

Innovative paint-less finishing resulting in a finish that is truly roadworthy.

Custom dimensions and options in the overall design of the guitar that will redefine what a truly custom guitar is.

An innovative manufacturing process that allows for on demand combinations of guitar necks and bodies.

And an entirely new way to assemble a guitar neck allowing for the addition of strengthening materials such as carbon-fiber or kevlar.

I have plenty of experience in marketing to get the word out about my product. As well as a robust web site outlining the literally hundreds of possibilities, a business image will be needed to establish Warfare Stringed Instruments amongst the heavy metal community. All of the marketing artwork will be done by myself.

Answer
You need to first research the term "Business Plan". What your future investors are going to want to know is that you can wisely invest their dough, to make your business grow and more importantly, pay them back with a healthy return on their investment.

It's going to pretty much be like a job interview. You will show them how far you have come with the little resources you have, and then you will have to sell yourself and the plan.

What is a good tube guitar amp to buy?

I'm having a custom guitar built, and was wanting to buy a new amp to go with it. I know the tube amps will give you the best sound period, but which is the most affordable tube amp that will still give you a great vintage sound? Thanks in advance for any intel.

Answer
Try Carvin Tube Amps.
http://www.carvinguitars.com/amplifiers.php

They are all nice, especially the Legacy's. But they are very expensive.
They have about three other tube amp models, each with different setups. You can get Combo tube amps, or half/full stacks.

I would recommend the X100B series. They sound very nice, and are pretty affordable.
