Whats the best thing to sit on while practicing guitar? Stool, Couch, Chair?

Braqs

Im thinking of buying a couch for my room but that might be like too soft for playing guitar and if i buy a 100 dollar stool it seems too uncomfortable. What to sit on?

Answer
In my opinion, the best place to play is a seat with a back to it, and no arm rest. Arm rests REALLY get in the way, and having a backrest (whatever it's called) is more comfortable than a plain old stool.

A couch is alright too, as long as you have room to play in it and don't end up falling asleep on it.

The chair I have right now is perfect, it's semi-soft, it swivels, it has wheels, a backrest, no armrests, and it's bright bright orange. :)

How can I prevent palm cramps in my left hand when playing scales on my guitar?

Q. My palm (especially the area between my thumb and wrist) sometimes have horrible cramps when I do scale work on guitar, and gets gradually worse as I go faster on the metronome.

Does my hand muscles just need to get strengthened, or am I doing something wrong posture-wise?

Answer
the other advice here, as well as hold the neck a little more upright. (I bought a foot stool for one of my feet that helps you maintain the correct posture, try that out)

How do you make playing electric guitar standing up easier?

Q. I have been playing guitar for about 1 and a half years, but I only really played sitting on my bed, now I'm trying to break the habit but I'm finding it really hard.
Does anyone have any suggestions on to make playing the guitar standing up easier.
I have a guitar strap.

Answer
I did the exact same thing and thought I'd never learn to play standing. All you can do is start practicing that way. It will be tough for a while but you'll get the hang of it. When I started jamming with my first band I was actually taking a stool with me to sit on. After a while I felt kinda stupid doing that so I just sucked it up and started playing standing. It took 2 or 3 weeks to get used to it though.

Do you get mentally exhausted when playing guitar?

When I play after 15 minutes or so my mind gets very tired. The same fatigue I feel after taking a two hour test. It's the closest description I can give. I sorta get drowsy and my eyes get heavier. Does the same happen to you guys? I like to play guitar; I don't think it's boring. This has been going on for te past four years. Every time I try to get better at playing I get tired and I just stop. If you guys do experience this can you give a suggestion to how I should combat this fatigue?

Answer
Hi, BB. Not much to go on, so I'll suggest some possibles. Like breathing, restricted by being almost curled up in a ball around the guitar, trying to practice on a bed or a low chair. If so, get in a more upright, open, relaxed position, at least sitting on a regular chair (without arms) or a stool, back a little straighter.

Or recreational chemicals, whether cigarettes, weed, beer, wine, etc., not known for their positive contribution to sustained serious effort.

Or the choice of music, if it seems to require great intensity in the speed, complexity, or muscle effort in trying to play it. Metal heads seem particularly into great physical involvement while playing, and may blur the difference between what's needed to play versus what's expected as visual evidence of true allegiance. (Did I actually say that? Meh. Probably listen to AC/DC while mowing the lawn tomorrow.)

So, if curled up around the guitar on a bed, smoking and sucking brews down, trying to play monster power chords, all at the same time...

I am quite experienced guitar player but I've just started learning how to sing. I've noticed, while singing posture is quite important, but I can't find any good posture for singing while sitting playing guitar. All postures are while standing. :/

Answer
I typically stand as well when I'm singing and playing, but when I've wanted to sit and create a more casual feel, I find the best way is to use a stool with horizontal slats. I put my right heel up on the slat so the knee is up and the guitar rests across that leg, and I leave my left leg down so my foot is flat on the floor about a foot in front of the stool. This helps me be able to keep my back straight and not be slouched over, which is important so you can sing properly.

To classical guitarists: What's your opinion on guitar foot stools and other guitar supports?

Which ones are the best for your back?

Answer
hi

Nothing dumb about footstool for krist sake. Classical Professionals even use them in concert.

The idea of the footstool is to give you the correct height and you don't have to cross your leg to raise your guitar. As far as the other support like a guitar-stand in playing position, Yngwie Malsteem and others use this stand because some of their songs start slowly. So uit allows them to push the electric to one side of the body and play the classical already prepared in playing position.

As for your back, its obvious that the sitting down position is the most widely used although a classic nylong guitar is light in weight. I have used one type that hooks to the soundhole from the underside. It is like a saxophone cord resting around your neck, except, it is for guitar. That actually worked very well and have used this a few time. It is adjustable to whatever height you want and it doesn't hinder any movement whatsoever.
