How to remove/replace knobs on a Les Paul?
guitar knobs gold image
Nunya Bidn
I have an Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus with push/pull gold speed knobs. I want to replace those with amber top hat bell knobs but I don't know which ones to buy. Do I need to buy knobs that are meant specifically for Les Pauls with push/pull pots or will any Les Paul knobs work? Also, are there any guitar stores that will do it for me?
Answer
I replaced the speed knobs on my LP Custom with amber top hats also and it looked great. You don't need special knobs for push/pull pots. I think the LP knobs just pull right off, no set screw.

How to get a guitar with my name on it?
guitar fret stickers image
billie jon
Hello,
I really wanna get a guitar my my name written on it and not just get out a crappy ARGOS pen and write it on. Preferably an accoustic because electric guitars are a FORTUNE on their own!
I don't really want a little plate on it saying my name. I want it in big bold punk sorta writing!
THANKS!
Answer
You have a couple options. If you want it on the body you would need to find someone to make a custom sticker or to airbrush it on the body. Generally when I see a name on a guitar it is on the fret board and it is custom inlaid. This is quite expensive.

classical/ flamenco guitar?
guitar yamaha c80 image
Nick G
I have a yamaha c80 guitar and i was wondering since its a classical guitar, would it sound good if i put flamenco guitar strings on it and played that. Or is it just for classical music?
Answer
Everyones ears are tuned just a bit different when it comes to preferences. What might sound good to one might not sound good to another. However, this is YOUR guitar. It only matters what sounds good to you, and strings can be relatively inexpensive. Therefore, I would advise you to go ahead and try it. You may start a new trend, or you may waste 30 dollars.

I need advice to make my bedroom reflect my interests (Reading and music)?
guitar vinyl decal image
Marissa
I'm 19, but still live with my parents and have always decorated my room in ways that they liked. I've always had a simple bedspread, and very little to decorate my walls.
For example, we moved a few months ago, and my bedroom is probably 10' x12'. I currently have a white Leirvik bed frame from Ikea, covered with a white quilt that has a print of small blue flowers, a matching white nightstand, and 2 chest- of- drawers.
So, anyway, I adore books, mainly fantasy (like Lord of the Rings) and classic fiction (The Count of Monte Cristo, Pride and Prejudice), and also some of the more modern fantasies like The Mortal Instruments, and The Inheritance Saga.
I also love music! My favorite band is Kamelot, which sort of reflects my love of fantasy. It is considered a metal band, but features operatic vocals. I suppose you could compare them to Queensrÿche, which is one of their more obvious influences. I also have a love for classical artists like Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi. I also like Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Cash, and of course Queensrÿche.
So I want to decorate my room to fit my two loves. I was thinking about painting one of my walls, or perhaps all 4. Another idea of mine is to involve pieces of song lyrics from my favorte artists or quotes from my favorite books somehow, possibly just painting them onto a canvas and hanging on my wall. Or perhaps there's a website or place like Kinko's where i can have them printed out like a poster, and cut it out and double-side-tape to my walls. Some ideas regarding this would be lovely.
Also, I had this idea to paint one of these lines from a song on the doors of my closet in glow in the dark paint, but it probably would look terrible during the day.
Another interest of mine is playing guitar. Right now my guitar stand holding my acoustic and electric is taking up a lot of valuable space in my small room, so i had the idea to hang them up on my wall. I need suggestions on how to hang them up, and what hardware to use.
So any ideas you can give would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Answer
I recommend looking into vinyl wall decals. They look great and won't leave any marks on your walls, I'm sure your parent would appreciate that. I suggest checking out http://www.tradingphrases.com. You can see if you like any of the current designs or you can request a custom quote and email back and forth with a designer and they can create something you would want.

What's the best cheap guitar effects to buy?
guitar effects image
Craig
I'm planning to save up for guitar effects but the big ones are so expensive. I've held such like the gt-8 and I really liked it. I don't have much money so I'm planning to buy the single pedals one by one. Any advice? I wish to know which ped to start with. I play experimental rock, post-hardcore or maybe jazz-fusion. Thanks!
Answer
Hello there,
A good basic distortion pedal should probably be your first pedal. The Boss DS-1 is a decent distortion pedal that does not cost an arm and a leg.

Can you convert a ps2 controller to xbox 360 and does it work?
guitar xbox 360 controller image
recklesszc
My friend and I both have Guitar hero 2, I have it for PS2 and he has it for Xbox 360. Is there anyway to convert my controller to the Xbox 360? I looked online on ebay and found a PS2 to USB converter, and since the nonwireless form of a xbox 360 controller is a USB port would that work? If not, are there any other ways for me to convert so we can both play on his Xbox 360? Thank you for reading and any input would be greatly appreciated.
Answer
No. This is entirely impossible, unless you have an active working knowledge of Microsoft-required circuitry and can somehow add components to the guitar to make the Xbox Guide work, and fool the internal checks. That's about the long and short of it.

How should i take of my guitar?
guitar rack image
~ Pianist
How should i take care of my takamine gs430s acoustic guitar?
I just bought it today and i heard that the cedar top is very thin wood so it dents and dings easily. I just want it to last. Like after i pratice with it, should i put it back in the Hardnut shell case? or should i just leave it on the guitar rack? And more tips much appreciated=)
Answer
Only leave it in the rack if you're sure nothing will hit it while you're gone. Otherwise the case is always your best bet.
And never leave your instrument where you wouldn't leave a baby. What's the difference between a baby and a guitar? A baby will get better if you drop it on the floor.

What Guitar Multi Effects pedals or pedal board is best with a Mesa Dual Rectifier Half Stack?
guitar volume pedal image
Bryan Dame
i have a mesa dual rectifier half stack and i need guitar effects like delay reverb, volume pedal, and maybe more and i was wondering what i could use for the best price or cheapest price cause i dont really have quite a whole lot of money but money isnt the issue?
Answer
Go with Boss pedals because they are truly the leading industry in pedals (after all they made the first multi-effects pedal and they are owned by Roland which is a Japanese founded company). The boss gt-10 has gotten nothing but 5 star reviews and has lots of excellent effects and sounds for rock and metal (which is what you want if you have a mesa).

I want to study music therapy and want to play guitar with the clients. Should i use an acoustic guitar?
guitar electroacoustic image
Q. Or should i buy an electroacoustic one? Also what type of music should i be learning to play?
Thanks :)
Thanks :)
Answer
An electric acoustic is still an acoustic guitar that can be plugged into an amp if necessary. This will give you the flexibility to play for a larger crowd if needed or to easily record the guitar.
If your goal is to use the guitar in music therapy than I would suggest developing a fingerstyle approach. By utilizing aspects of folk, classical, and jazz you should be able to convey feelings of peace and serenity to your clientele.
A very noble ambition, I wish you luck

What is the correct thumb position while playing lead electric guitar?
guitar neck rest image
Kathy
I'm just starting out. When playing licks and solos should I keep my thumb pressed against the back of the neck for support or resting around the top of the neck?
What is the correct thumb position?
Answer
When first starting teachers will tell you to plant the thumb in the back of the neck, but the main thing is to be sure you don't contact the neck with your palm, because the angle of your fingertips would not be correct. The more vertical the down pressure of your fingertips the better.
If you wrap the thumb your contact will be in the web of the hand between thumb and forefinger. I sometimes even fret notes on the low E string with my thumb when playing some chords.

When you say bass guitar does that mean its electric?
guitar electric image
Malikah Si
Is the bass guitar electric guitar or is it acoustic? I know it has 4 strings but when people tell me they play the bass the first thing that comes to my mind is a electric guitar with 4 strings because it does have to be plugged up right? Or can a bass be electric or acoustic? Can it be a acoustic guitar with 4 strings that has a sound hole so you don't have to plug it up ?
Answer
It could mean electric or acoustic. I came across an old Fender Acoustic bass shaped like a guitar. It had a great sound actually.
Like Russell pointed out, you have the double-bass and the upright-bass as well.

What acoustic guitar brand should i get for a beginner and price range?
guitar repair kit image
Missinthec
i was thinking an acoustic guitar, maybe black.
would yamaha be a good brand for beginners?
i don't know much about guitars, and what price range should it be in? i heard that you shouldn't get one too cheap. so im not sure.
Thanks for helping!
Answer
I could name you brands of guitars I've heard, and brands I've played, and brands I like, but it wouldn't make a difference. Instead of telling you which brand is king, here are some tips:
Honestly, my best advice is to go to your guitar shop and look at the brands. You can go online to get one, but it's a hit or miss when talking about how you'll like the sound and the feel.
Type: If you're a beginner, I would go for a nylon string guitar, as a nylon string guitar is easier on your fingers. The first guitar I played was on a Yamaha classical guitar, so I think Yamaha's are great. But I wouldn't say only get the Yamaha, because there might be a better guitar you find there.
Price range: Below $500. I wouldn't say you need a minimum, as long as you don't get the "Learn guitar in whatever kit" with the cheap ass acoustic the size of a breadbox at Barnes & Noble, but probably not under $100 (unless it seems legit. If you can't tell, probably don't get it).
Size: Find a guitar that you like at the shop, based on the size and feel. In classical guitars there isn't much of the size issue (they're pretty much all the same size), but if you get a steel string, there will be a great variety of sizes. Concert size, dreadnought, curved back, jumbo, etc... Size is just a couple of numbers and dimensions. What matters is how it feels for you to play it. If it's too big or small, the size will get in the way of learning the guitar. So the best thing to do is not worry about the brand name and experiment with different sizes.
Sound: You don't want it to sound terrible, but it doesn't matter as much as the feel. It's great to have a nice sounding guitar, but it's not going to make a difference. A guitarist might sound better on a new Alvarez than a half a century's old Yamaha, but a great and experienced guitarist playing an old, rickety guitar will always sound better than a beginner with an expensive and exquisite sounding Martin or Taylor.
Pawn Shops: Is there one in your area? Go! They'll almost always have guitars in store, so check it out. When dealing with pawn shop guitars it's almost always necessary to have an expert, or anyone who knows about guitars with you, so ask your guitar teacher to go shopping. If your pawn shop is a nicer one, some or all of the guitars might be new. Sometimes, guitar manufacturers will sell new models to pawn shops, just because there is a blemish in the wood, or a weird pattern. The pawned ones are very cheep, but the "outlet" models will still be cheep. I got a new Michael Kelly from a pawnshop for $150, and it's been great for five years so far.
IF YOU DON'T KNOW A GUITAR EXPERT, but still want to go to a pawnshop, look out for a couple of things.
1) Play the strings: Go up each string, and play them at each fret (not long), just to make sure there is no buzzing. If you're not sure what this means, or you're having trouble with this, ask the pawn shop guy to do it. They all pretty much have basic guitar knowledge, if they aren't experts.
2) Sight for problems: From the base of the guitar, look up across the fret board. If you, see a strange bend back, or if any frets look out of place, or crooked, not good. Again, ask the pawnshop guy.
3) STAY AWAY FROM CRACKS: It might mean that the guitar is cheap as dirt, but with use, the crack will spread, and your precious little antique of a guitar will crack in two, with damage beyond repair in a guitar shop.
Thats pretty much it. I hope that you can use this advice and get yourself a great guitar.

What kind of wood is used for the top of the body on a Gretsch guitar?
guitar veneer image
Tman
I am making a custom Gretsch guitar what kind of wood is used on the top of the body for a Gretsch? I would like a source for your answer please. Prefferably a site I can research.
It is hollow body. The reason I am making it is my uncle passed away and he worked for Gretsch. I am finishing his project.
Answer
Gretsch is a brand of guitar, so unless you are Gretsch, you can't make a Gretsch guitar. On top of that, making a copy of a Gretsch, or Gibson, or any model for that matter without permission is illegal.
I can tell you what the guitar is made of, but you need to provide which model you are talking about, whether it is solid body or hollow body, and what year it was made. All this info is needed for a correct answer.
EDIT:
Almost every acoustic electric Gretsch ever made was laminated... you take several sheets of veneer, spread glue between them, place them over a mold, and clamp it down with a matching mold top or a vacuum press. This ain't easy, even if you have the tools.

What is the latest Guitar Hero game for Wii?

I have a Guitar Hero World Tour for Wii but, it broke. I want to buy the newest Guitar Hero for Wii. What is it.
Answer
Guitar Hero (Game Only) is a great title for anyone who ever wanted to play guitar with a rockin' band, but hasn't yet devoted the time to learning how to play. If you've ever turned your stereo up and rocked out, this game's for you. If you've had a rough week and you just need to dance it out... go buy Dance Dance Revolution.

How much does it cost to get a guitar wiring fixed?
guitar wiring image
Jack
I have an Epiphone les paul 100 guitar and two of the tone knobs dont work and the switch is a little shaky. How much would a local guitar shop charge to have this fixed?
The guitar plays and everything but the tone knobs just down do anything.
Answer
Shop rates vary a great deal, however this is a very simple fix for any competent repair person as the controls just need cleaned with a product called Caig DeOxit.
Check around locally, especially the small independent shops. Many will offer a "tune-up" special at a promo price.

How would you go about weighing a full sized bass guitar and amp?
guitar amp stand image
Ellie
I'm planning to sell both my bass guitar and amp on Ebay, but i need to weigh them in order to know what the postage would cost. How can i weigh them?
Answer
I would stand on the bathroom scale just you - mark down your weight
Then pick up the amp and stand on the scale again - mark down the weight
Then put down the amp and pick up the guitar and stand on the scale again - mark down the weight
Just subtract your weight for each
I see those "thumbs down trolls" are at it again :[

How do you hook up 2 guitars, drums, and mic to PS3 for Guitar Hero? Do you need to use a usb hub?
guitar usb flash drive image
Cowboy
I tryed using my usb hub but it does not seem to work. It is a cheap hub and I don't think it is giving out the power it needs to. So is a hub required or am I missing something?
Answer
If it is a cheap hub, it probably didn't come with an AC adapter. Just buy one with an AC adapter, because small hubs were made to power small devices (cameras, flash drives etc) and guitar Hero instruments NEED more power than that.

What to plug a double neck guitar bass into?

Q. I'm thinking about getting a double neck (guitar/bass) and I was wondering what most people would do to plug it into. Maybe a bass amp, and then EQ the guitar using the preamp on the guitar (cut bass, and even it out)? I don't think it would be a good idea to plug into a guitar amp because the bass frequencies will damage the open back speakers of a guitar cab. Anyone know what to do? Thanks.
Answer
I've owned a couple of these over the years, and it's almost mandatory to have 2 amp rigs. When I was using these, I was primarily a bass player so I had a decent bass rig. For the guitar side, I started out using a small Fender Deluxe.
Seriously, if you can afford a double-neck like that, you can afford a second amp. Most companies that do sell them are built-to-order. The cheap knock-off stuff out of China is horrible unless you really like plywood guitars.

How do i get the bridge pins out of my bass?
guitar zippo image
Michael
i cannot get the bridge pins out of my Dean 5 string acoustic bass. ive tried everything. ive loosened the strings and pushed in and tried to pull out(didnt work) ive cut the strings(even though i know its not good) and tried to push up from the underside of the pegs (didnt work) ive tried gently tapping the pegs down a bit with a rubber mallet and a towel, didnt work, ive tried pliers and a towel to pull them out(didnt work) ive tried using the lid of a zippo(didnt work) ive been to shops and all over online and none of the bass string winders have the tuning peg tool and the guitar one obviously isnt big enough. ive been at it for days and im a few more solid attempts away from just drilling through the pegs and buying new ones. unless anybody out there has some sort of super secret method of doing it. please help me

The difference between an acoustic guitar and an acoustic electric guitar?
guitar acoustic electric image
MissBenzed
What differences are there between an acoustic guitar and an acoustic electric guitar? I'm a first-time guitar buyer and wondering what differences there are. Do they sound different? Play differently? Any input would be great.
Answer
Essentially the same in terms of appearance though an electro-acoustic has a pick up and is plugged in so it can be amplified and the sound can be altered. Some electro-acoustics can be played without being plugged in though others have the hollow covered over so the sound does not amplify. Alternatively you can get an acoustic guitar and have a pick up fitted. Though for me, an acoustic guitar is just fine. You can always mic it up if you're performing.

What type of piano music should I play for a James Bond Themed Night?
guitar organizer image
Nikki L
My grade is going to host a a show night at our school theatre and one of the organizers wants me to play some kind of James Bond genre of piano music. The problem is, I'm not sure about what this type of music IS. I'm supposed to play for 30 minutes before the show starts (which is James Bond themed. Go figure.) so it's meant to be entrance music to set the mood for the night. Any level of piano music is fine. Thanks!
