I am going to be building a guitar kit this summer, and i was wondering what really is finishing the body and neck, what it does, how to do it, and what i'll need to do it. Detailed answers would be best. And how would i go about painting it?

Answer
Hello there,

I think I answered this same question for you somewhere else. Just in case it was a different person, Here is my thoughts. If this is the same person's question, please excuse the repetition.

That should be an interesting project. If you know anyone who has an air compressor and paint spray, you can get a better paint job. Ask them to help you with the paint job. It is pretty much the same process as painting a car. So, if any of your friends or relatives do custom car work, hit them up for some help on the paint job.

If you do not have access to an air compressor and paint spray, you can do the job with spray cans of paint. You can get an acceptable paint job with spray cans, Won't look professional, but may look decent enough.

Sanding the the key in my opinion. Need to sand the body well to get it ready to finish. Shoot the body with a coat of sealer (or shellac). Then sand the rough points down smooth. Then apply your coats of color. Sand between each coat. Then shoot your clear coats on and sand between coats of clear. Do a little rubbing and buffing (polishing compound) and you should have a slick finish.

If you do not have a good place to paint, Try this paint booth.
