What are the screws on the bridge of my acoustic guitar for?

i have an acoustic guitar by Gibson it is kind of a cheapy but not that bad. i am a beginner and know nothing about guitars. on the bridge of the guitar below where the bridge pins go there are two screws one on the left and one on the right. there used to be a little rubber cover thing above both of these screws but they came off. the right screw on the bridge has come loose. i am wondering if this will affect anything, and what are these screws even for. if you could help me out that would be great. the bridge is glued so its not like the screws are whats holding it on. also if the loose screw is affecting something how do i tighten it?

thx in advance

Answer
Hmm. If the screws are indeed below the bridge pins, they're not for adjusting the saddle height as some have suggested. Height adjustment screws are big knurled things at either end of the saddle, and I don't recall any Gibson acoustic models with them anyway. You do see them on some entry level acoustics though. The saddle sits in a metal carrier with the height adjustment knobs at the ends, and the whole carrier sits in an oversize slot in the bridge. You screw the knobs IN to raise the saddle. But as I said, those knobs are in a different location from yours, and they are big - usually about 3/8" diameter, with knurled edges and a slot for a coin or big screwdriver.

Screws to help hold the bridge on, with or without glue, are usually the sign of a very cheap guitar. Are you SURE this a Gibson? People sometimes talk about "Gibson Epiphones" and "Gibson Maestros", but these are misnomers. I have seen pictures of a Gibson model from 40 years or so ago with a plastic bridge held on with screws, but AFAIK they thought better of it rather quickly.

I sure wouldn't call any real Gibson a cheapie, either. They're pretty much all over $1000 new. I've seen cheap imported guitars with clumsily forged Gibson or Martin logos on the headstock, though.

Anyway, if the screw is helping hold the bridge on, there should be a nut on the inside that you can tighten. You can get at it by loosening the strings and working through the soundhole.

Piezo dots (pickups) are also sometimes installed in that location but I don't think you would be confusing one with a screw once the decorative plug had fallen out.

What is the best deal on a guitar loop pedal?

guitar looper image

ISS5731

I want to get a looping pedal for my guitar (something that I can press down, play some chords, and then it plays them back over and over again so I can play over them). Im looking at guitar center, but I'm not sure what the best brand and what exactly I should be looking for in one. Basically, please give me advice on a brand, where to get it, how much it should cost, and what specs it should have.
Thanks!

Answer
Dude, if you can afford it the Line 6 JM4 is incredible. It is expensive, $329 but calling it a looper is a slap in the face. I bought mine at GC. It is basically just the brains out of the Spider Jam. Obviously you can loop, but it also has hundreds of great models and hundreds of drum tracks, not drum machine crap, but actual drummers like Carmine Appice, Jason Bonham, etc. laying down killer grooves to play chord progressions over. It also has hundreds of full jam tracks to play lead over. Whether you are looping or playing with drum/jam tracks you can record and over-dub right on the JM4. You can save 24 minutes of CD quality recording to the on-board memory or add a 2 GB SD card and get over 6 hours of recording. You can then transfer to your PC via SD and burn your recordings to CD. There are also inputs for bass/keyboard and an XLR input for a vocal mic. You can basically do everything from this one piece of equipment. A little expensive compared to a regular loop station, but is by far the coolest and most helpful thing I have ever purchased concerning guitar. If you just want a basic Loop Station get the Boss RC-2 but for another $140 you get the some of the best musicians in the world as your personal jam band and full recording capabilities.

Please note that i am an Novice and started playin recently. Please guide me!

Answer
I'd try a few things. You need to isolate the problem to establish if it is the guitar or guitarist

First get someone else to play it, someone that you know has a reasonable technique. If it rattles for them you could assume it's the guitar. Then I'd try a few things, the first being have a good look up the neck and see if it has a bow in it the wrong way, r a bump at some point. It could be that the neck alignment is out. If yu don't know what you are doing, don't fiddle with it, take it somewhere credible for someone to check it out. It may be a loose internal brace, but probably not.

If it doesn't then it might be your technique. In this case I'd consider swapping to a lighter set of strings. Also I'd be looking at the way you hold your strings down, whether your fingers ar getting in the way of the string vibrating. Look at the way your thumb grips the neck and whether you could make a fine adjustment to your handle to get a better grip. Your hand should be relaxed but firm. A lot of players hold their left hand too tight, you can get the same same result (or better) by relaxing into chords instead of forcing them.

Or maybe you are tuned down too low. Check it with an electronic tuner. And make friends with other players with a little more experience ASAP.

What are some good ways of relieving stress for teens?

I'm very, VERY, stressed lately. A lot of Family issues and then to top that i go t a a performing arts school, so im in two plays, and i have 5 concerts for vocal piano, guitar, jazz band, tap and jazz + finals for al my core classes and extras. what do i do?

Answer
As far as stress relieving goes I do not find sports to be the greatest choice. In the end if your team ends up losing the game you will just be more stressed

I see that you are having problems with your family. If these are arguements between you and another family member I recommend that you either avoid the topic of anger for awhile. If that doesn't suit your style I strongly recommend (this applies for amy family problem) you get everyone involved into the same room, sit them down, and just talk the problem over until you find a solution.

At school I notice you have 2 plays and 5 concerts. This is an amazing amount of work and undoubtably the biggest source of your stress. You are trying to do way too many things at once. I realize that you may be an over achiever and feel the need for all this mess, but I recommend that you atleast drop one of the plays. This could really help with the stress and don't forget that you could possibly drop one of your instruments too.

Good luck with your stress problems I hope for the best.

How to stop guitar strings from rusting?

Every time I play guitar, after a couple of minutes my hands start to sweat for no apparent reason, and rusts the strings very badly. I usually wipe my hands on my shirt or something, but the sweat comes back in a matter of seconds!
Is there any way to protect my strings from rust or moisture?

Answer
Ah...another profuse sweater! The guys in my band kid me about it all the time. The running joke is if I lean up against a bank safe I could rust my way through it in about an hour.

That all said, if you're strings are rusting then you're not cleaning them well enough or not changing them often enough.

Wash your hands (soap and water...not just wipe 'em on your shirt) before you start playing. And be sure to completely wipe the strings down with a clean dry cloth after you finish playing. The oxidation process (rusting) takes time.

You might try different brands of strings. For some reason, I can kill a set of Ernie Ball strings in one or two sets (less than 2 hours playing time). However, D'Addario XL's hold up very well for me.

Finally, if you live near the ocean the salt air is going to corode metal. Period. The only answer to that is move...or change your strings.

Good luck.

Greetings from Austin, TX

Can I remove sticker glue of my guitar head head stock with ronsonol?

I bought my strat 5 years ago.
The stupid store HAD to put their store logo on the guitar head. I ripped the sticker of because I got mad at it and now there is a pretty big spot of glue on the guitar......great

Will ronsonol or any zippo style fuels damage the guitar finish?
It says on the container that it is excellent for removing glue. But im afraid of damaging my guitar

Answer
Lighter fluid (naptha) works very well, and used sparingly (not allowed to puddle and dry) will not damage your finish. Just apply a little to a soft cloth (microfiber is best), and gently remove the offending glue. Since you left the sticker on for so long, the glue itself may have etched the finish; in that case, use a quality guitar polish (after the naptha) to smooth the surface. Best regards, Dana

P.S. Norm has a lot more experience than me in working with guitar finishes, so I would defer to his recommendations. I have always had good success with naptha, but maybe I have just been lucky!

Im 15 and i currently have an electric Fender guitar. I can play a few song and riffs. Im into deathcore and things like that. But lately guitars had been getting boring. I expanded my genre to all types yet nothing. Im an allright player, but piano had caught my eye. Would piano be funner and easier?

Answer
The answer to which one would be funner depends on your personal predilection and aptitude for either instrument.

Do you own or have ready access to a piano? Try one out for a few extended periods of time where you can relax and start to get to know the instrument. See how you and your body react to it.

Then play guitar at some point with the same goal in mind and really notice how it makes you feel. By then you should have a much better idea of which instrument to concentrate on. Don't forget, there is a whole world of instruments and techniques out there. Good luck!

What is considered fast when playing scales on guitar?

I still consider myself to be new to guitar 4 1/2 months, but I started playing the 5 pentatonic scale patterns and I practice up and down the neck in various keys and am just getting smooth at 250 bpm with various patterns. I'm playing on an acoustic. I just want to know what is considered to be fast? Thanks.

Answer
cbjr is right on.

Fast depends on the song, and the beats per measure each note is given.

If you're playing a song in 4/4 time, generally...16th notes would be considered fast..usually counted like... 1e and a, 2 e and a, 3 e and a, 4 e and a. Each of these 16 notes would have to be played in one 4 beat measure.

As others have said..it's not speed, it's feeling...and one last thing...do NOT neglect your rhythm playing.

You will never be a good lead guitarist, until your are a good rhythm guitarist.

Too many youths want to shred today and ignore areas of far more importance to being a good musician.

If its using only a specific method, I dont think you can, but you might as well have him give lessons or make a dvd and see what happens. If hes using a system that has something material to it, like stickers for the frets etc., then he can, but Id search around and make sure his method hasnt been done before so he doesnt go get this patent and then deal with legal bs.

What's the best way to connect my guitar to laptop and record the sound/video?

Can I record the video with my webcam, and record the sound directly off Guitar Rig 5? I also have Audacity installed

Answer
A guitar to USB cable. There are some technical issues caused by user error due to lack of instructions.

1. Have no sound? The device needs to be listed as an input device on the computer. the way you will hear the guitar, such as with speakers, amp or headphones, is the output.

2. Hear crackling noises or delays while you play? You will need an ASIO driver such as ASIO4ALL. You will need to play with the buffer size and frequency.

There are multiple ways to record the sound and video. The easiest way is to output the pusic from the computer and record everything by camera with a built in mic. The more complex way is to use a mixer (hardware) with sofware such as Windows Movie Maker.

Q. I have been playing guitar for about 1 and a half years, but I only really played sitting on my bed, now I'm trying to break the habit but I'm finding it really hard.
Does anyone have any suggestions on to make playing the guitar standing up easier.
I have a guitar strap.

Answer
I did the exact same thing and thought I'd never learn to play standing. All you can do is start practicing that way. It will be tough for a while but you'll get the hang of it. When I started jamming with my first band I was actually taking a stool with me to sit on. After a while I felt kinda stupid doing that so I just sucked it up and started playing standing. It took 2 or 3 weeks to get used to it though.

Sappy Down

I started back into playing my Acoustic guitar and was thinking about this topic: Is it healthy to play guitar? Does it count as decent exercise? If so what does it benefit?

Answer
It's healthier than sitting around the house watching TV or playing XBox. It keeps your mind alert and active and should be a good stress reliever. Apart from that, though, it doesn't count as "exercise" the way that going for a jog or doing aerobics or lifting weights would do.

There are some health risks with playing guitar, too, though; stretch out carefully and develop good technique when playing, or you can get into carpal tunnel, tendonitis, and repetitive stress fractures in your hands and forearms.

What is a good amplifier for a electroacoustic guitar?

Iker Casil

Hi. I am interested in getting an amplifier for my electro acoustic guitar. I want it to play soft relaxing music though, not rock. What is a good amplifier brand or something? My budget is about 100 bucks or less, I have seen some for 60 dollars but they specify electric guitar, I don't know if that is going to work well with an electro acoustic guitar... I mainly interested on something that is durable and reasonably cheap, any brand suggestions?

Answer
I doubt it very much that you can get something that cheap. Even doubling the price won't do much I'm afraid if you're after something with at least a bit of quality. That said, I think you can get some Behringer stuff for under $100 (very low output though and Behringer stuff is well ... not the best quality).

http://www.zzounds.com/cat--Acoustic-Guitar-Amps--2589

An amp for acoustic guitar is totally different from electric guitar. First the speakers are different since these are meant to be more full range, where an electric guitar is more focused in the mid frequencies.

For this you tend to have a full range speaker, or more than one speaker - often a treble unit and a lower end speaker combined.

Also, you typically have more inputs and outputs on an acoustic amp than an electric one. Different types of inputs also in addition to the standard 1/4 inch jack.

Furthermore, acoustic amps are designed to play clean even when the volume is turned up. This requires a better build quality and often better components.

If you intend to play live with the amp - the need for volume comes in. So you will either need a larger and better amp (the Behringer is a toy for live use), or a very good PA and monitor set-up in order to hear yourself properly.

If you plan to play for the seniors at their Sunday coffee, you can do that without any amp at all. But add other musicians (drums and electric guitars in particular), plus an audience with a bit of volume and a regular stage and you are talking about major headaches for acoustic amplification.

I play guitar and sing and want to start playing some shows and am looking for a new amp. I only have my guitar and my mic, so what exactly do I need to play like bars and clubs and stuff. I am looking for a completely clean amp, because I play blues stuff.

Answer
If you are looking to run both channels through the amp, you will need an amp that accepts both a quarter inch jack and an XLR (mic) input. The best setup for that is the bose L1 system that will run you quite a bit.
You can also try to find a fender acoustic amp that has both channels or a Trace Elliot TA800 that has 2 channels. The vocals will sound mediocre on these types of amps.

The best option is to see if the bar has a sound system and then bring some good "pre" equipment. Get an Avalon U5 DI for an acoustic.

Can you use a guitar/bass tuner to tune other string instruments like a violin and cello?

Answer
Yes. A violin is tuned to a higher octave, but shares the same notes. It's actually exactly backwards from a bass: G-D-A-E. A guitar tuner will work fine. Some instruments have more and/or different notes than the six on a guitar/bass tuner. For them you need a "chromatic" tuner which tunes all 12 notes of the scale.
I use a chromatic tuner for my pedal steel guitar, and so does my daughter for her sitar.

What do you guys think of the Classical guitar Yamaha C70? It's for about 147$. I'm a beginner and never had a guitar before.

I had this guitar for 5 years. It is a great choice. Its voice is really good and sweet. It has a really nice dynamic range! It’s easy for the left hand and doesn’t make a lot of buzzing when holding a barré.

Problem is, for a classical guitar the strings should be a little higher than this.

Anyway, you can never find anything as good for beginners!

or could i put a capo on frets to make guitar in KEY A?

Answer
I assume you are looking for an open "A" tuning, so that A is played without any fingering. This is too restrictive on an acoustic, as you would have to tighten or slacken the strings to the extent they would be too slack or would break. (Either the strings or the neck!) Drop the guitar to an open D tuning, then capo at the 7th fret.

The D Tuning is : D/A/D/Fsharp/A/D (Thickest to thinnest)

How loud is a semi acoustic guitar without an amp?

guitar ornament
on Personalized Guitar - Musical Note Ornament

slugger

Is it loud enough to just practice with without an amp or is it like a normal electric guitar where you have to plug it in to get any noise.

Answer
You can practice on it fine, as long as your practice space isn't real noisy. It will have some acoustic properties, but this is mostly to give a warm rich tone to it while plugged in. I'd say it's maybe twice as loud as a solid body not plugged in, so still not very loud.

I practice on my solid body electrics all the time with no amp. As long as it's quiet in the house, it works fine to keep your fingers in shape. And I can practice without bothering my roommates, even at 3:00am.

I also have to tell you, semi hollow bodies are not all equal. I would image a custom shop Gibson, or a nice hand built would resonate better than a factory made from overseas.

To Norm, I don't have any problem hearing hammer on's and pull off's on a solid body when I'm not plugged in. It sounds just the same as when I plug in, as far has how the notes come out relative to each other. Maybe it's my technique, but my HO's and PO's are as loud as I want them to be, as loud as the note that's been picked usually. Are you coming straight down on the bony tip of your finger for the HO? Moving from the base of the arched finger? For PO's are you giving the string a little downward thwack across it with your finger as it pulls off? Makes the left hand finger work as a pick. Both those things will make these ornaments as loud or soft as you want...

Anything that you can put a lot of time into will look good. Colleges look for people who spend lots of time and effort into a few things they like over people who fill their application with every hobby and group they ever went to a meeting for. Im planning on taking acoustic guitar lessons, but dont know what a good guitar would be to buy. I dont want anything to expensive and I need one thats good especially for a13 year old beginner. If you could add links of different guitars, That be great!

Answer
I don't know whether you are looking for a steel-string guitar or a classical guitar (both are acoustic), but either way, your best bet is to visit a music store and ask to try out some guitars in your price range (which should be at least $100 and probably about $150-300). Yamaha, Epiphone, and Jasmine are examples of decent makes for beginners. Avoid buying online or from discount stores or big box stores. There is a lot of unplayable junk out there, especially in the sub $100 range, and you don't need to waste your money on a lemon.

P.S. In case the issue comes up, a 13-year-old most likely needs a full size guitar, which means that scale length is 24.5 - 25.5" and body size is whatever you find comfortable. "3/4 size" guitars are for kids of 8 or 10.

How does an Ibanez output jack work?

I'm new to playing elctric guitars but it seems the output jack on my ibanez isn't making any connection with the lead, I tried another lead but that doesn't seem to be the problem. Also the nut seems loose but it's always been that way and I never had any problems with it before. If I could get some information on how the output jack works it might really help me to fix it. Also if you think you might know what the problem is please let me know.

Answer
When you plug the cable into the jack, it makes contact with a strip of metal that's bent to match the indented part of the tip of the cable connection. It's pretty common for that to become loose over time. If you feel comfortable taking it apart, then you can just bend it back some by hand. Also check if all the connections are still together. Also, is the guitar active? By that, I mean do the pick ups get a boost from a 9volt battery? If it does and the battery is dead, then that could also be your problem.
