How does my built in guitar tuner work?

guitar ibanez
on NAMM Oddities 2005 - You Figure It Out
guitar ibanez image

Timster

I just got a beginner guitar (ibanez aeg10e). It is pretty cool. It has a built in tuner. I kind of know how to use it. I mean I turn it on then press on a string then it says one letter. But on one side there is a lower case b and on the other side there is a # sign, what do they mean? Anyone has the same guitar or anything will help.

Answer
b is flat and # is sharp. if it is flat, or b, then tighten the string. it is is sharp, or #, then loosen the string until its flat then tighten, because if you just loosen it, it will loosen by itself.

I am a 13 year old girl and i decided that i want to play an electric guitar (ibanez guitar). Is it goof for begginers, also i have 0 expierence, sadley. I basically want to play covers of songs such as Asking Alexandria- a prophecy and and A candlelit dinner with inamorta. Is it easy? what does it take? and how did you learn how to play it?

Answer
It's really about the way the guitar feels to you. Do you feel comfortable playing it? That's the most important thing when first starting out.

Also, 'A Prophecy' might be a bit hard to learn when first starting out. Try learning "Not the American Average" first - it's much easier, and will get you accustomed to playing that style of music.

I want to start gigging with my guitar. What's the least I need for equipment?

Music: Ska, Rock

Right now I have:

Guitar: Ibanez RG 120
Amp: Crate gt10 (I could obviously use a much larger amp)
Pedals: Digitech RP3

What else would I need at MINIMUM to start gigging?

Answer
well you already know that you need a new amp. one thing i will say about that is that you could get a half stack(which are usually preferable because of tone and volume and other reasons) but a nice 2X12 combo amp is also an option. it wont help you as much with house shows and gigs that you set up places but if you are playing a club or sumthing with a PA system they can easily mic your cab(theyd have to even if you had a half stack).

you are probably gonna want to invest in other important small things. Such as new reliable guitar cables. these are very important because i was never more p!ssed than when my guitar cable gave out right before a solo.

also simple things like a guitar repair kit. just something portable. all it has to have is an extra pair of strings, a pair of pliers with a wire cutter(helps with changing strings), maybe a pitch pipe, a screwdriver to open your guitar up, and some extra pics.

Some things you may be interested in after playing for a while that make gigs a lot easier are a tuner pedal (so you dont have to stop and unplug ur guitar and plug it into the tuner and all. you can just engage ur pedal). you could get a pic holder that snaps onto the mic stand. ummm lots of water. an absolute necessity.

but the first two paragraphs you should definitely check in to. the third will save ur @ss one day. and the last are just the icing on the cake. good luck kid

When is it time to get a new guitar?

I've been playing guitar for almost a year now and i'm really getting good. I like to play van halen, metalica, and other rock songs with good solo's. Right now i'm looking at the guitar ibanez rg4exfm1. If anyone has any advice on how to ask my parents to get a new guitar (i can play rather advanced stuff like crazy train solo and starting to get fast at arppegios) because they keep saying your still a beginner.

Answer
Make it known to them in some form that you've been treating your instrument very well, you've obviously been very dedicated to learning the craft and you feel you should have a more adequate instrument if your going to advance as a musician.

My parents bought me my first guitar when I was in my freshman year of high school and told me that if I learned it, they'd get me a better guitar. I ended up buying all of my own guitars after that... they still owe me a guitar though but I let it go because they put me through film school.

By Affordable I mean preferable $300-$600 range
Here's an example and if I can't find anything else I'll probably go with it
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/ibanez-grg250dxb-electric-guitar
It's the cheapest Ibanez there is
are any of the LTD's good?
What else are good?

Preferably 24+ frets

Answer
Hello there,

To my way of thinking, you need a fairly flat fretboard for shred. 12 inch radius or flatter. I think a fixed bridge is preferable to avoid tuning instabilty. But if you want a whammy bar, that is fine. Get a tremolo bridge.

I do like Ibanez guitars. Ibanez makes some great guitars. I do not consider the Gio series part of those. They are too cheaply constructed for my tastes. They seem like low end Squiers to me. I think the RG series is better.
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/ibanez-rg370dx-electric-guitar

I liked the older Charvels (pre-Fender buyout). Charvel made a great fast slim neck.
http://www.guitarcenter.com/In-Store-Used-USED-CHARVEL-MODEL-3-USA-041512-107666633-i2474735.gc

Some of the newer Jacksons are decent. Take a look at them before you decide.

I thnk Schecter makes some great guitars for the price. Do take a look at that line.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/schecter-guitar-research-omen-extreme-6-electric-guitar
One of those has active pickups and the other passive. Which depends on your taste in pickups.

Schecter makes a good 7 string, if you are interested in one.

Later,

How to get the Jimmy Page clean and distorted tone like stairway to heaven and over the hills and far away?

Chase

Guitar : iBanez s520ex
Equipment

Vamp II
80 watt Crate DSP on Board

I'm covering stairway and need to get both the tones great. I know I'm using an iBanez and not a Gibson but I hope it wont sound so bad. I can play both versions through.
(Led Zeppelin IV Album Version)
(The Song Remains The Same Concert 73')

Answer
Page uses small amplifiers and set up microphones in the middle of the floor to catch echos. At the time of Stairway, Page was trying out a complimentary stereo amplifier sound system made by Hammond Organ called the Condor Sound System -- essentially a concert organ head to drive 3 speaker banks.

You hear the Condor at the live concerts and the phased echo in the studio.

Whats the difference between these guitars?

I'm curious as to what the difference is in these two guitars: ibanez v70ce and ibanez ijae5. They look exactly the same to me just one is cheaper, but I also don't know a ton about guitars.

Answer
looks like the v70ce has better parts and is made of better stuff (nicer: has the mahogany parts and a rosewood fretboard which is much nicer than the stuff on the other guitar) you can see and compare the features on musiciansfriend, guitar center, etc. there are usually check boxes on the left side of each item (when you're on the search results page). Just check the 2 you want, click compare at the top or bottom of the page, and it'll make a custom side by side comparison of every single thing. I'd go with the v70ce.
