Answer
I'd recommend going to Musician's Friend (musiciansfriend.com) and checking the solid-body electric guitar listings, since you can search by brand, price or customer rating. The site has customer reviews, as well, which are a great resource. You definitely don't have to pay a fortune to get a really nice, playable electric guitar, though I'd recommend making a trip to a guitar store to test drive a bunch. Each maker tends to have its own feel and sound, so it's worth handling a bunch of them to determine your preferences.

I have a bunch of guitars, including Fender, Ibanez and Rickenbacker, but I bought an Epiphone LP Jr. a year ago just because it looked fun. Since it only cost $129, I expected it to be a glorified toy, but it's actually a fantastic guitar. Epiphones are made by Gibson and are built like rocks, but cost a fraction of the price. The LP Jr. has that crunchy Gibson sound, a fairly thin neck and it's gorgeous. And since I ordered it from Musician's Friend, shipping was free. Here's a link, in case you're interested:

The Squier by Fender guitars are also great players and you can buy them for less than $200 used on eBay or Craigs List. I'd avoid the Affinity series Squiers, though, since those are known to have tuning and intonation problems.

If you find a particular model of guitar you like at the guitar store but don't want to pay retail, you can shop for it used online. The great thing about the bad economy is it's easy to pick up great used instruments on the cheap. Just trust your instincts and choose a guitar that's really comfortable in your hands. Good luck!
