Skylar.

I really want to learn how to play the guitar, specifically acoustic. However, I don't have the money to pay for lessons so I was just wondering how hard it is to teach yourself. Also, are there any helpful sites for beginners that I could use?

Answer
i also taught myself how to play.
i could play my favorite (and fast) songs within around 3-4 months.
it takes:
-correct technique (dont start playing sloppy, just so you can play it fast or at 100% speed, always start slow, get the fingering right when you're learning a song, and use proper bending, vibrato, strumming technique)
-practice & dedication (if you wanna get good, you're going to have to give up some time you'd be spending with a gf/bf, drugs/alcohol, friends, and even your pet, in my case. just know when to stop playing and get back to life)
-correct mental attitude (getting frustrated makes you play horribly, you miss notes, get off on timing, and then it makes you even more pissed, it can almost get to the point where you wanna snap your guitars neck. so take it easy)

if you're trying to play a song from your favorite band/artist,
www.ulitmate-guitar is your best bet. make sure you pick high rated versions of the particular song/tab. this website also has many lessons on guitar techniques, music theory, and scales.

it all sounds complicated now, but it's really not that hard to get a general understanding over. its a good hobby, and a good thing you want to play, it's a gift for your soul that you can enjoy for the rest of your life.

good luck and just e-mail or whatever if you have more questions.
