Answer
The following steps will allow you record a short clip in Microsoft ® Sound Recorder. This is a very simple application that comes with all Windows operating systems. To use the LightSnake with other computer based music software, please defer to your software’s manual for proper setup. However the setup steps for this process will be very similar to many other applications so it is recommend that you try using Sound Recorder first.

The cable should use the provided USB audio drivers with Linux also, but there is no recording software provided with the Linux operating system. You will need to purchase or download a recording application to record with Linux. Please defer to your recording application’s manual for proper setup.

1. Connection
Insert the XLR plug of the LightSnake into your microphone jack. Plug the USB side of the cable into one of the computer’s USB ports. The computer will recognize the cable and install it as a new hardware. When this is complete the LightSnake’s light should be glowing green and not flashing. If you have a Windows 98 or 98 SE computer you will need to install the driver provided on the included mini-CD.

2. Verify your Sound Settings
On your computer go to into your Control Panels and access the Sound settings. The LightSnake will show up as “USB Audio Device”. Make sure that you have selected this as your recording device. Then verify your playback device. This will most likely be your built-in soundcard, if you have a different device choose the appropriate device for sound playback. Make sure you do not select the LightSnake as your output; this will cause you to hear no sound during playback. Once you have these set properly click OK.

Click on the Windows logo in the bottom left hand corner (Start Menu), click on control panel, Click on the Sound Icon, Click on the Recoding Tab, Strum your Guitar you will see the levels move to the right of the microphone, if these are always near the top click on the Microphone icon that has either c-media or USB Audio Device, then click on the properties button, click on the level tab, set your level. I find that somewhere around 25 works. Click OK, Strum your guitar again if the level is still always near the top go back and bring it down more.

3. Recording with Sound Recorder
Open Sound Recorder. This will be located in the Programs folder directly in the Accessories folder or in the Entertainment folder in the Accessories folder. Hit Record, the green light should start flashing on your LightSnake. Start talking, and hit Stop when you’re done. You can record for about 30 seconds. Hit the Rewind button and then press Play to listen to what you just recorded. You will not hear your voice as you record. Sound Recorder does not have this capability built into it. This feature is known as input monitoring and is available on many different recording programs.

No Playback Audio?
“I think I’ve installed the LightSnake correctly, but I can’t get sound.” You need to verify what device you have set for playback. Go into your control panel or system settings and verify that you have not selected your LightSnake (USB Audio Device) as your output device. You may need to check the same type of setting within the program you are using for recording or amp modeling.
