guitar pick maker image

I am really interested in learning to play the electric guitar but I have no idea which one to get. I also need help picking the brand for an amp. I'm left handed so I know how that will affect my options a bit. One of my favorite bands is the strokes and I'd like to be able to play them.
Answer
ok first off ignore that first answer. Sure you can never go wrong with a stratocaster but thats a bit too expensive for a beginner to get. so i recommend you go and buy your self a Yamaha Electric gigmaker starter kit. You'll be glad you did. The guitar is a yamaha eg 112c and is a strat copy and it comes with a 10 watt amp with a distortion switch with bass and tremble and master volume knobs. The guitar has a master tone and a master volume knob. It also has a 5 way pickup switch like a strat. The gigmaker kit also comes with a whammy bar (correctly named as a " Tremolo Arm" to a guitarists.). It comes with a pack of guitar picks. A electronic tuner so you can tune up to standard tuning quickly. It also has a guitarist beginner's book that covers basic guitar playing and gets you familiarized with the chords. So now i bet your asking me how much for this Gig maker kit? Well save up money and depending on where you live you can get all this for around $200 in the US or if you live elsewhere it may go up to $400. But hey if you buy all those parts seperately then you may be spending an extra $200-$300 dollars. With this your saving that $200-300 which is a HUGE amount of savings.
Notes
Yes i own the same kit i described above and it is very versatile with sounds i can go from a bluesy sound to a hard heavy rock/ metal sound with just a flick of the distortion switch and adjusting my bass and treble.
It has 2 single coil pickups and 1 humbucker at the bridge. If you dont know what that is then a single coil is a somewhat weaker pickup and the humbucker is stronger in sound but its more distorted. A single coil is more crsip and defined in terms of sound but you'll have to crank the volume to have it be heard in a crowd but your a beginner so i take it your gonna play in your house so you dont have to.
