Im a beginner, about to buy my own guitar, and when i look at the discriptions, i see 21 fret jumbo, 22 fret, 24 fret, ect. I dont want to buy one of those mini guitars for kids, so i was wondering how many frets should be on a standard sized guitar
Answer
19-24 frets is about average, but fret count is NOT going to tell you whether a guitar is classified as "mini" or not. Most ads for mini-guitars make it plain that it is a "3/4 size" or "mini-guitar." This reduction in size affects the instrument as a whole, not necessarily just the fingerboard. SOME minis have full-size necks, and others are simply smaller. They still have a standard fret count.
I wouldn't knock these "mini" guitars either. I own several and they are not only REALLY fun to play with, you take 'em with you wherever you go. They're great for practicing in a car, and cheap enough that you can leave them there because they're easily replaced.
