Okay, i have never had a guitar pedal in my life. I want to get a few low-priced pedals. Questions:

1. How do you use pedals?

2. What are 3-4 good low-priced starter pedals?

3. What should you buy with the pedals?

Answer
You use pedals to color your sound... to add some spice or flavor.

I always recommend Boss pedals, since they are very rugged, have a good middle of the road sound, and last forever. They aren't the cheapest pedals out there, though. Danelectro pedals are pretty decent, are inexpensive, and while they aren't as good as Boss in terms of ruggedness or sound quality, they still work pretty well. I used to own a Fabtone, and it amazed me how close it sounded to the Metal Zone... if I had a better EQ at the time I think I could've gotten pretty close in terms of tone.

My two suggestions are to play every pedal you can so you start to get an idea what you want to do as far as effects and to also check out places like pawn shops for cheap pedals.

Different pedals have different sounds, and different types of effects have different uses, and can be used many different ways. Chorus, for instance, tends to be more subtle, and is great for clean sounds and for adding a little something extra to a solo. Delay is a beautiful thing, great for making textures, doing u2-like lines, and for making ambient sounds (volume fade-ins). EQ is great for customizing your tone - cut a little bass, boost a little treble, cut out that nasty low-mids frequency, etc.

Pedals need cables just like your guitar does. You need one cable that's long enough to go from your last pedal to the amp, and for every pedal after that, a short (6" to 1 foot) cable to go between them. They need to be powered, so either batteries or a power adapter. I suggest the power adapter whenever possible... batteries can get used up pretty quickly. There's something called the Onespot that works pretty well.

Good luck!
