guitar volume knobs image

My guitar buzzes through the amp pretty badly. If I touch the strings it worsens. Unless the guitar's volume knob is turned up all the way.

There are a few possible reasons for this. The most likely is that the potentiometer is dirty and needs to be cleaned. It could also have to do with the wiring in the guitar, specifically the ground wiring on the back of the volume potentiometer. Believe it or not, a bad cable can also add to this problem.
If the guitar pickups have been changed from single coil to humbucker and the volume pot was not changed from 250K to 500k then the result could be problems with noise at reduced volumes.
The fact that it gets worse when you touch the strings would seem to indicate a grounding problem. I suggest taking it to your local music store and let them check it out for you.
