I am about 5'4. I'm a girl. And I am looking for my first guitar. But I want it to be a quality, not so expensive guitar. Im not sure if the store has new or old or used guitars but is there anything I should check for like wood or brands or length or anything? thank you!

Answer
Along with the preceding suggestions I add these:

1. Check the height of the strings from the fretboard where you see the double-dots in the 12th fret. If they are much higher than they are from the rest of the fretboard ask a guitar technician to adjust the action. Check for warpness of the neck. A slight bow is acceptable unless it emits buzziness while plucking the strings.

2. Check for wobbly or cracked machine head keys--what is used to tune up the strings.

3. Check for volume and resonance at playing a simple chord. Is there sustain? Does the sound linger?

4. I prefer rosewood backs and sides for my guitars, but my very first one was a Gibson parlor-size guitar--one that would be perfect for you. While it is made of all mahogany sides and back--with a spruce top--you could benefit from a smaller made guitar other than buy what is called a dreadnought size--the largest made. Gibson guitars are higher-priced, but you can find great deals by logging on to www.musiciansfriend.com.

5. A few cracks on the body top are acceptable provided they're not huge. Any cracks on the sides and back are less than desirable.

6. The poster that said old guitars play well is correct unless they are in bad form with too many cracks and warped necks. A spruce top that once was blonde in color, but now a honey-brown is a keeper.

7. Above all, test any potential guitar you might buy. If it feels comfortable then consider buying it. If you have any reservations about it, move on to another one.

Good luck in your acquisition of a best friend for life.

What is good to clean a electric guitar body and fretboard?

guitar polish

adam

What would be good to use besides actual guitar polish? What household stuff would work? I'm mainly trying to get finger prints and finger grease off the body, neck, and the gunk off my ebony fretboard on my Parker Guitar.

Answer
Once a year i use Formby's pure lemon oil on the necks of my guitars. With old strings on lay the guitar on its back on a table. Put a towel underneath the neck to catch the drips that fall, then squirt the oil on the neck making sure to get enough on to cover the entire fretboard. Let it sit for about 2 minutes then wipe the remaining oil off with a hand full of paper towels. The oil is good for your neck but its important to get the excess off as you don't want to let too much soak in but you have to put enough on so you get it on the entire fretboard. As you wipe off the remaining lemon oil it will also clean the neck of any grease or dirt. After about a week change the strings and your all set. You should also use the oil to clean the body, but only a little bit so you don't leave it greasy. For a regular neck cleaning i use a little windex sprayed on a wash rag then wipe the neck making sure to get in between each fret. Do not spray the windex on the neck, make sure you put it on the rag then wipe the neck. I do this when i'm putting on a fresh set of strings.

Dave

My guitar's bridge has begun to break apart where the strings are resting-- the strings are starting buzz when i play it, due to the damage. How much would it cost for a fix?

Answer
The strings ride on the saddle. The bridge is the wooden part that the saddle sits in. You can buy a plastic one already shaped cheap at a music store. Bring your guitar and let them pick one that fits. I'm talking 3 or 4 dollars. The best saddles are bone and have to be shaped by you or them. All of my acoustics have bone saddles that I shaped. Check it out and see which is the best way to go. Good luck.

What should i practice to become good at lead guitar?

Q. I want to become good at lead guitar and guitar in general. Right now im really good at power chords and stuff but i think its time to go outside the box and do what i aspire to do- lead guitar. however i dont know what to practice. Help me out? Thanks

Answer
Saxaphone.

Seriously, listen to some great blues sax players. They are great at improvising. If you can play your guitar and make it sound like a saxaphone you'll know you've got some skills. You said you wanted to get "outside the box".

As for guitar, the best thing you can do for playing lead is to know your scales inside out and upside down in all 5 positions. With my more advanced students I like to just play a chord progression and tell them what key to play in and have them improvise. After a minute or two I'll tell them to modulate to another key and see how well they can get there. You really have to know your scales well though. It's not that difficult really if you know the patterns in the 5 box positions. Get a good scale book and just work on for an hour every day.

Also, get a looper pedal so you can lay down a rhythm loop and jam over it. I use my iPad for this but a looper pedal would be good. I also have a drum machine on my multi-effects pedal, so I usually have that going when I'm practicing just to keep a steady beat. Keeping on beat is very important as well for playing lead.

Playing good lead guitar isn't necessarily so much about technical skill as it is about knowledge of the guitar and a good feel for music. You have to know what you want to play and where to play it on the neck. If you can't sing what you want to play you won't be able to play it. When you listen to a song, try singing a lead part (using "bops" and "beeps" or something like that). When you get something you like, figure out what notes on the guitar those bops and beeps are. A lot of great lead players either do that out loud or in their heads while they're playing. Otherwise, your leads are just random runs up and down scales and sound very mechanical, not musical.

If you use the tremolo a lot and wish to avoid the inherent tuning problems that come with it than the Floyd Rose could be what you need. There are other non locking tremolos and locking tremolos available so be sure to research the possibilities.

What guitar pedals are good for playing live?

Jesse

I have a wah, big muff, a tuner and delay pedal. I'm look to add a tube screamer and reverb pedal, and maybe a noise reducer.

Does anyone think I need a booster pedal to get my sound out for live shows and guitar leads?

Answer
Tube Screamer is an excellent choice..one of my favorite pedals.

I have a Hush noise reduction pedal, but the problem is, it only stops the noise when you're not playing. I have since change my pickups in my Strat to noise reduction pickups and this is a much better system.

Here's my current pedal setup from guitar to amp...

Vox Wah..except for one or two songs, I mostly use this as a tone control.
MXR Dynacomp
MXR Distortion +
Ibanez Tube Screamer
Boss Tremelo
Boss Chorus
Boss Digital Delay

I use a Roland JC-120 for live shows, and it has excellent chorus and reverb, so I don't see the need for a reverb pedal. I actually prefer the amp chorus over the Boss chorus pedal, which I use for maybe one or two songs a night.

I'd say get the Tube Screamer, and Guitar Player Mag says the cheaper ones sound pretty much like the more expensive models.

Also some kind of compressor, like my Dyna Comp, is a great addition.

If you're having nosie problems, remember, batteries are quieter (usually..until they get old) then plugging your pedals into often unshielded wall outlets.

I'm 17 years old and I'm planning on setting up a home recording studio and learn my own instruments. I'm having trouble learning instruments online and I'm thinking of going for classes. I'm planning to learn acoustic and electric guitar, ukulele, bass, drums, piano and hopefully master all of it as soon as I can. Which instruments should I start first? If I learn electric guitar first, will I be able to pick up acoustic guitar on my own after that? And is there any low cost and fast way to buy the instruments and learn besides online classes? :) Thanks a lot in advance!

Answer
Well probably the hardest and the most intense is drums depending on what kind of music your into. Drums will teach you perfect structure and timing. And personally I find it easier to build a song starting with drums first. I hope I helped :)

What is the difference between acoustic and electric acoustic guitar?

???

it sounds like a stupid question, but i'm starting in like a week, acoustic guitar, but the teacher said i just need an acoustic guitar. nothing specific. i know NOTHING about guitars. so help please!!! and what are some good acoustic guitars for a beginer?? and whats the 6 string and 12 string difference beside the number of strings? i know i asked a lot of questions but i really have no idea. help!

Answer
Alright, I really want to help you in your musical life. Whatever you do, do NOT get a 12, 7, or 8 string guitar, that's not even for advanced players, that's for people who want a whole new instrument. Only get a 6 string guitar. There are three types of 6 string guitars: acoustic, acoustic-electric, electric, hollow electric, semi-hollow electric. Don't even think of the hollows or electrics yet, only stick to acoustic for now. I highly recommend that you start with a full sized dreadnought acoustic-electric, with steel strings and a cutaway; and not nylon strings. An acoustic guitar is a 6 string guitar without any electronics at all, just a traditional steel string guitar. An acoustic-electric guitar is basically an acoustic guitar with the capabilities of connecting it to an amplifier or XLR inputs (You don't need to worry about the XLR inputs, you'll learn about it later.), and it also has a three-band EQ (EQ=equalizer, which includes bass, middle or mid, and treble and sometimes a phase button which sharpens your sound, all these redefine the sound of your guitar while it's connected to an amplifier. Now some also come with built in tuners with display lights to tune it which'll come in handy more times than you breathe because everytime you pick up your guitar, you'll need to tune it. If you combine all these features, you have a preamp and pickup. A preamp is all these gadgets combined basically. A pickup is something to give your guitar the power to connect to an amp.).

I know it's a lot to read, but I really want to help guitarists acheive their musical goals. These are all available at Guitar Center, but you can find them at other places too.

If you have the money for expensive guitars, here are some I recommend: Fender CD140SCE NAT acoustic-electric guitar $300 (Which I recommend the most out of EVERYTHING because I have experience with it, and has all of the features stated above, and I have experience with it, so I know what it's like, and best of all it's beginner friendly and great for all levels of guitarists. It's the best guitar for the lowest price.), Ovation CC24 NAT acoustic-electric guitar $350 (Which I recommend second, out of EVERYTHING because it has all of the features stated above, and more.), or the Ibanez AEG10E.

Now if you're on a really tight budget (since acoustic-electrics are usually $100 more just because it has some sort of electronics on it), you'd probably stick to acoustics only. I recommend the Ibanez IJV50 acoustic jampack $100 (which comes with the acoustic guitar, strap, gig case/bag, extra picks, extra strings, chromatic tuner, chord chart to help you learn, and other extra accessories. I think for a hundred bucks, that's the best deal you can get, knowing that it's a quality guitar.), or the Ibanez IJAE5 jumpstart acoustic-electric $200 (which comes with all of the jampack accessories, including wires and an amplifier, which for two hundred bucks is a real deal. The only problem is that at Guitar Center they either are out of stock or they don't sell it anymore, so if they don't have it, try somewhere else.) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that all of your guitars have cutaways, which you'll see on guitars that on the right side of the body of the guitar, it has a small cut to reach higher notes. I really hope I helped you.

I have a guitar amplifier which makes unwanted noise when I connect my guitar to it. It happens because the amp is not connected to ground because my house's electrical wiring is bad. I manually connected the the gorund line to the earth and the sound went away. What I want to know is, Can I connect the ground line to another source with high capacitance (such as the earth) and let it be small and portable at the same time?

Answer
Do you have copper old medal water pipes that go into the earth where
you have seen this. If so you can use that as a ground while at home
but when you leave your house seek compliance grounded wired sites.
There is no fake ground substitute that I know of. It sounds like you
know your home is a danger if an appliance gets grounded and you or
someone comes in contact with it.

DarkSTARan

I have a first act electric guitar (yeah its cheap), and my friend was telling me I would be better off buying a new better guitar than upgrading the pickups. So my real question is: Is it possible to put new pickups in a first act guitar without cutting/drilling holes to make it fit?

Answer
Most of the time, no routing and drilling is needed, unless the pickups are really huge vs your existing cavity size, or with some guitars when you want to go from single coil to humbuckers. Consult with a guitar tech to get a better answer than that.

Does the guitar play well, and does it have the basic tone that you like? If so, then you don't need to get a new guitar, just get new pickups. In a general sense, you want the basic tone to be in the guitar, and pickups to help balance the tone out and have the right amount of output suitable for your style of music.

For instance, if I want a relatively dark tone, but one still suitable for non-detuned punk music, I would probably go with a mahogany guitar and pickups that are medium-hot with a lower bass response than other pickups. If I wanted a versatile guitar, I might go for a basswood guitar (yes, I said it) with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and Pearly Gates or a DiMarzio PAF Joe in the neck. For alt/indie/pop punk, I might go with an alder or basswood body and relatively high-output pickups with a decent or large amount of bass response - the Strat + Seymour Duncan Invaders is a well-traveled route, ie, Blink 182.

So it kinda depends what you want. Be aware that if you have too hot of a pickup in the bridge you won't be able to get a clean sound out of it... I believe the Invaders fall into that category.

how to understand guitar notes and tabs available in the net?

guitar notes
on Chord chart for each of the 7 major keys with fingerings for the 1, 4 ...
guitar notes image

G

could anyone please explain to me about how to read and understand the guitar notes ?available in the net which is being given by many notable guitarists?

Answer
OK. This one is easy dude.
So, basic tab looks something like:
---------------------------
----1---------------------
----------2----0---------
---------------------3----
---------------------------
--------------------------

Now, each line is a string, with the first line being the first string (highest) and the last line being the sixth string (lowest). Each of the numbers are frets, the 1 being the first fret, (the closest to the head), 2 being the second fret, and so on and so on. Their are other symbols such as / or \ for slide up or slide down, respectively. H is for hammer-on and P is for pull off. * usually stands for harmonics, which is a whole different matter. There are many, many more symbols, but you can just look those up on the internet when you come across a new one. Now, a common problem with tablature as opposed to standard notation is that you can't tell how many counts to hold a note for. You'll have to listen to the song for the rhythm. I think this is a good answer. The question was oddly worded so I just did a lesson in Tablature. Also, you can get free tablature from either ultimate-guitar.com or 911tabs.com. Oh, as a closing note, tablature generally takes the place fo chords for finger pickin' songs. hope this helps!

I know there are guitars with USB inputs in them, and I know there are amps with usb inputs, but is there an adapter for USB headphones, that will turn into a guitar amp jack?

If not I suppose I'll have to save money for amp headphones :\ but that would suck.

Answer
I have never, in my life, seen a guitar with ANY sort of input. Let alone a USB one.

Guitars have outputs. Sound comes OUT of them.

I've never seen an amp with a USB input either.

I take it that you have a pair of USB headphones that you would like to connect to the headphone OUT jack on your amp, which I assume is a 1/4" TRS jack.

The equipment you need to do this would easily cost more than a new pair of headphones. Do you REALLY not have a single pair of headphones that aren't USB? I really do find that hard to believe.

Go to RadioShack and ask for an 1/8" female to 1/4" male TRS adapter. It should look like this: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062468

If you really don't have another pair of headphones, buy these: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&biw=1440&bih=663&q=sony+headphones&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=8211118125321107406&sa=X&ei=eDs7Tp7EM9HKiAL3hMHaCw&ved=0CH8Q5Q0wAg

Those are THE BEST headphones you can buy for under $25. They sound quite good, they are very durable, and they come with the aforementioned adapter.

not without slowing down the strum, you can put napkins or something inside the strum bar thingy and it should muffle it a bit but it also might make it impossible to hit really fast notes

2. What kind of oil to use?
3. Where to find it?
4. Do you apply it after installing the frets of before?
I cant find much info on it. Thanks
Yes. I am getting the fingerboard from lmii.com and they radius it for you and slot it for you but you have to put the actual frets in yourself.

Answer
yes
Tung oil or linseed oil.
Any paint store.
After.
Follow directions. Thin coats. Hand rubbed. (lotsa 'elbow gease'.)

None of my business, but you'd really be better off
buying the fingerboard with frets installed.
Those locations are critical, and there's a lot of work
ruined if you get one even a bit wrong.
The 'pros' have precision jigs to get it right, you don't.
