When playing guitar hero does playing the game help you improve any part of playing an instrument.

I've thought about this a lot.
Where the Drums in Rock Band or World Tour have quite a bit of technical similarity with real drums, its not the same with the guitar peripheral and the guitar peripheral is not really very similar to playing real guitar.
With that said, guitar hero does have a few very specific things that can be learned.
- You will gain strength and longevity in your left hand fingers, and in the muscles that let you strum with your right forearm
- You will get a lot of independent finger muscle articulation in your left hand, which later can be applied to playing guitar or piano (this is where you can play a bunch of different notes quickly on the real instrument - it will take much practice, but at least the muscles will be developed)
- You will get a shadow of the skill of translating things you see with your eyes into subtle (ish) things you do with your fingers (you might have already had that from other video games
- You will get coordination between left and right hands
- You will probably develop a good sense of rhythm
Last but not least It's a great warmup for playing real guitar
So as I said, its nothing like a real instrument but there is a lot to be learned.
