I recently bought a new guitar (gibson les Paul studio faded). The strings on this guitar are different than the gauge of strings on my old guitar, and I really like these new ones. How do I tell what gauge they are so I can put new ones on when these wear out.

Answer
Bring them to a local music shop or google. Their are different types of strings. I belirve its nylon and brass, but hard to tell.

Usually guitars come with a pack of strings (my Fender came with a pack) with measurements on it.

Sorry I couldnt really help you bro, but I tried

Cool Guy

So, I'm 100% new to guitar; I know close to absolute nothing. I'm looking for an electric guitar only, don't even bother recommending acoustic. To give you an idea of what kind of music I'm into, I listen to Trivium, Arch Enemy, Metallica, and Avenged Sevenfold. As for guitar sound, where does this come from? Is this the amp or tuning of the guitar? Essentially, I'm asking how you get that "metal" sound. As for price range of what I'm looking to spend, I was looking to spend around $200 total. I'm not sure what kind of quality that will buy me. I was looking to buy a lower middle quality guitar/amp. If I have to spend more, I definitely will consider it. If you recommend guitar, preferably link me something from another website like Guitar Center so I can thoroughly look at it. I'm unsure as to where to buy it too. Should I buy it from an online store or at a physical store like Guitar Center. Also, I'm going to be self taught (since I'm not close friends with someone that plays guitar) so are there any recommendations for books or websites that will help me get started? Any recommendations for anything at all would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
your best bet is to go in a guitar center and look around, tell the people there what your budget is and they will help you out. as for the 200, i dont think if that will get you what your looking for. sure there are kits like this for cheap: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Silvertone-Citation-Electric-Guitar-Package-Liquid-Black/10298395 however, they work well for a starter. you mentioned that you wanted that metal sound and that mostly comes from the amp setting ( all those knobs that you see ). any guitar can make any sound, some better than others but the amp really characterizes the sound. as for buying, go look around in guitar center and pawn shops, DO NOT buy from ebay or any private dealer, your sure to get crap and overpay. you can still buy online but from an official company not a single person.

Actually, you can plug it into your computer (if you have a wired guitar) and use it to play a guitar hero simulator such as "frets on fire".

It can be used as a controller on any other game but it may make playing that game a lot more difficult.

How can I remove a bridge pin on an acoustic guitar?

guitar bridge pins

Allison T

I just tried to change my acoustic guitar strings for the first time, and the bridge pins are really stuck in there. I tried to remove the low E string with needle nose pliers and wiggle it out, but the top of the pin broke and the rest of it is stuck in there. Any suggestions of what I can do to get it out?
I reattached the string so it's still playable, but I can't change it and I'm afraid to change the rest now!

Answer
Okay, loosen your low E string and take it off of the head of the guitar. At the bridge, push the E string down into the guitar an inch or so. This might loosen the pin. Reach your hand into the hole (you probably need to loosen the other strings) and see if you can push out the pin with your fingers. If you can't, try pushing it with something hard like a house key or a coin. Try pushing the other pins out using this method. Again, remember to push the string further into the guitar at the bridge to loosen the pin. You might have to buy a new pin or you can try super-gluing it together and see if you can reuse it.

You might want to check out this tool: http://www.guitarlessonworld.com/lessons/lesson2.htm
It's called a guitar string winder and it comes with a tool to take out the pins. I recommend this over the other method. You can find it at any music store. Good luck!

Can Guitar Center put on violin strings for me?

guitar foot rest

guitar foot rest image

Steven

I'm new at playing the violin and have no experience, but willing to learn how.
I had several difficulties putting strings on the violin because of the bridge is not glued, the pegs, etc. Really stress me out! I tuned G string correctly and it took me more than 2 hours to get it in tuned, but everytime I tried putting new strings and tuned the others, the G string will not be in tune (as well as the other strings). and of course, I broke them So I have to buy a new pack.

So I was just wondering if I go to guitar center and buy me a new pack of violin strings, will they be able to re string it and tune it for me? also, will the charge me?

thank you.

Answer
Hi Steven,

Since Guitar Center sells violins, I'm sure someone there would be able to put the strings on for you. Whether or not they would charge for it, I don't know.

A better bet would be to go to a string instrument repairman or string instrument shop (you can Google this). These are small shops that specialize in violins, violas and cellos and are run by one or two people. They would be able to string up your violin, but better yet, be happy to show you how to do it yourself.... the correct way.

Of course, if you do have a teacher, that would be your best resource, but since you say you're new at this, I figured you're not taking private lessons yet.

Putting on new strings and tuning a violin can have complications that are not apparent. Bridges are not glued to a violin. They are held in place by the tension the strings put on the bridge. This allows the bridge to be moved to different locations on the violin top in order to adjust the sound. Also not apparent is the soundpost which is a wooden dowel inside the violin that contacts the top and bottom of the violin. It's approximately located below the foot of the bridge on the E string side. This is also held in place by the tension of the strings. Like the bridge, it is not glued in place so that it may be moved to adjust the sound.

Now, if you remove all the strings from the violin, not only will your bridge fall down, but the soundpost may also fall down. You can get the bridge back up fairly easily, but in order to get the soundpost repositioned, you would need a special tool. This is where the violin repairperson comes in handy. If your soundpost has fallen down, I would recommend you go to the violin shop to get it repositioned before you put all your strings on. For one, without the soundpost, the violin will not sound right, but more importantly, if you put all your strings on, it might damage the violin top since it no longer has the support of the soundpost.

When I replace all 4 strings, I will do only one at a time while leaving the others on in order to maintain tension on the soundpost to avoid having it fall down. If your violin has no strings on it, but the soundpost is in position, then I would suggest stringing the A string first while positioning the bridge, but not tuning it to full tension just yet. String up the rest of the strings the same way. All the while check that the bridge is perpendicular to the top of the violin (actually it is the side of the bridge which is closest to the tailpiece which should be perpendicular. While you are winding the pegs, you'll find that as you tighten the strings, the bridge will start to lean toward the fingerboard.

About the bridge... The low side of the bridge is E string side. The bridge should be positioned so that all 4 strings are centered on the fingerboard, and that the feet of the bridge are in line with the notches in your f-holes.

You mentioned that when you added a string, your other strings would go out of tune. This is the nature of tuning a violin. Even if you have all 4 strings on, if one is badly out of tune low, and you tune it up, all the other strings will go slightly lower. Often you will have to tune all your strings multiple times before your violin is acceptably in tune.

Turning the pegs. There is a technique for this. You have to apply some pressure to push the peg into the pegbox while twisting the peg. If you are tuning with your violin in your lap, use one hand to twist the peg, and the other hand to pluck the string and to support the neck while pushing the peg into the pegbox. If you are tuning the violin under your chin, then you have to position your left hand in such a way that your thumb and one finger are twisting and another finger or two wrap around the opposite side of the pegbox so that you can squeeze the peg inwards while twisting the peg. It's a little hard to describe, but easier to see. Perhaps there is a Youtube video on this.

Sorry for the lengthy reply. I hope this was helpful

Good luck in your endeavor!

I think I have a good understanding of the basics of guitar music theory. I have learnt about scales, intervals, triads, modes, modulation and some other stuff. Not a great deal but I have a decent idea on it all, and if all else fails have a book that does know everything. I want to write some riffs but I don't really know how to put my theory into practice. Are there rules that should be followed or trends that make riffs popular?

Answer
Basics of music theory are helpful, but rules and scales don't help in composing music. Fresh melodic ideas are necessary. There does not help any theory book.

How can I learn to play the acoustic guitar?

Liz

I have been wanting to learn how to play the acoustic guitar however I don't have the money to pay for classes. So how can I begin? How can I learn to tune my guitar( i own a guitar)? Do you have any suggested youtube channels, anything? Thanks:)

Answer
As much as I think the other answer is great, I honestly think he could have been more specific, so I'll try to do so.

So being a beginner in the 'music world' is always difficult, with dedicated practice, you'll get much better. Like Jesus stated, or whatever his SN is, you need to start with your basic chords. He wasn't very specific as to what those were. Basic chords mean your open-position chords, or in other words, chords that aren't being barred. Barre chords are chords that you place one finger over more than one string at one time. Avoid those for maybe a month because you need to build finger strength and get calluses so you don't feel pain when you play anymore. (It's normal, don't worry about it.) Your basic, open-position chords will be chords like: A Major, A Minor, C Major, D Major, D Minor, E Major, E Minor, G Major, and some variations like Dsus4 or stuff like that, but those are chords you can learn on the side when you learn songs. When you see chords on chord charts or tabs, they'll probably just say A, Am, C, D, Dm, E, Em, and G. Obviously the 'm's' stand for minor. So that's that for you. Once you learn those and feel confident on those, then learn barre chords: F, B, Bm, etc. You'll see the difference and there are different ways to play each chord on the guitar. Some guitarists just use barre chords and some open-position and some use a variation of some power chords. You pick what you like.

To tune your guitar, you will need to know what notes to tune your guitar to, obviously. Standard tuning for a guitar is EBGDAE or EADGBE, however you want to look at it. EBGDAE would the strings listed from highest in pitch to lowest in pitch. In other words, if you were to think about this for position on the guitar, the strings that are lowest on the guitar/the strings that are closest to the ground are the ones you would tune first. EADGBE would be the opposite and if you are confused by explanation, I apologize greatly and I'm sure you can look up on google or YouTube 'standard tuning on a guitar' and someone will be able to explain it better than me. If you need to learn to tune your guitar, I would either buy an app on your iPod Touch/Smart Phone/iPhone. Don't get any free ones. Those are really bad and they're slow and they're honestly very annoying. If you buy an ultimate-guitar tools app, it has a tuner and even a chord chart and it's a very helpful app for guitarists. Anyway, if you don't want to do that, then buy a chromatic tuner. Some tuners are 10 dollars and some can be up to 40 dollars depending on what features the tuners have. 10 dollars is fine but I'd recommend maybe something between 20 and 30. Tuners break so it's nice to have a nicer one so they can last longer. In addition, there are tuners for guitars that you can clip onto the headstock, but you decide what you want.

If I were you, I'd start with a book and start with YouTube and maybe even charts that you can find. When I started, I started with a song because I was way too eager, but I actually started with a book and I learned how to play a basic song by picking the notes and not learning chords, but you can choose. Books are a great tool and so is the internet. If you need tabs, I'd use ultimate-guitar.com. If you need to learn songs and you don't want tabs, then I'd use either Marty Schwartz or yourguitarsage (just YouTube them). youguitarsage has MANY beginner acoustic guitar tutorials on songs that you may want to learn and Marty Schwartz has both acoustic and electric tutorials and some are more challenging and he even has tutorials on some scales. Mahalo.dom or just Mahalo has tutorials for both acoustic and electric guitars and they have different teachers for their company and you can switch between all of them and decide which one of them you like most and see which teaching style helps you.

I hope I've been some sort of help! Good luck and have fun and don't forget to practice! You don't need to learn any instrument during summer, by the way. I learned guitar during spring break and still played during school. Just keep practicing and don't get discouraged. Everyone has troubles. I know, I did and gave up for like. . . a month or two.

is the earring sound of the guitar after pressing a note normal?

guitar earrings
 on Twisted THICK Hoop Earrings
guitar earrings image

michael

i was wondering after i press a note or do barre chords , certain earring sounds come after. is that normal? im using an acoustic squire fender though.

Answer
Fret noise is normal
Harmonics to some degree are normal, but objectionable if too pronounced
A muted "thump" sound is caused if you don't have all the strings fretted in barre chord
The resonance of the body of the guitar is expected, and sometimes produces objectionable results at specific frequencies (worse in cheap guitars)

... i have no idea of what an earring noise is, unless there's an ear ring inside the body of your guitar. (Is there a pick inside the body?)
