I bought a Yamaha CPX500FM Acoustic/Electric Guitar about a year and a half ago. I recently decided to restring the guitar, but the new strings sound terrible. What brand or type of strings should I invest in?
Answer
Truth be told, there is actually less difference between the various brands of strings than what we might be inclined to believe.
The reason why your new set sounds bad may be because it is a different gauge (thickness) than what you have used before. Or it may be that you have been used to hearing dull strings (some folks find the sound of new strings too bright - strange but true). Or, you may have put on the wrong kind of strings - like electric nickel wound strings, rather than bronze or similar made for acoustic steel string guitars.
If the set you changed is the one that came with the guitar, it is likely a set of medium bronze strings.
Like the other guy said, you might want to try D'addario or DR. Or you might want to try coated strings. The nanoweb Elixir strings are good. Lasts longer than regular sets. But not for a year and a half... 3-4 months is a long time if you play on a regular basis :-)
Oh, and yes - if you have changed to a lighter set, then you may have gotten some string buzz caused by lower action as a result of less tension on the neck. if this is the case, then you'll need to have someone who knows how adjust your neck truss rod for you. Easy to fix, but you will need to know what you're doing!
