I know at some point I'm going to have to learn some guitar theory to increase my skill with the guitar, were would you guys suggest I start?

Personally I believe that it's not necessary to learn the theory behind guitar. The guitarist in my band has never studied theory, and as far as I can tell, hes an amazing guitarist. My recommendation would be to find a good drummer/bassist who you can jam with. At first start simple, and then see if you guys can get more complex as you get better.
