what i want to do is split a track into separate tracks e.g. separate the guitar from the rest of the track so i can mute it and play along with the song.

You cannot do that. It's virtually impossible.

Mixed tracks are like mixed paint. Once it's mixed, it's extremely difficult. Consider trying to get the color yellow from green.
