i've written it down on paper, but it really doesn't sink in. are there any other ways?

Hello there,
With time it will be a matter of understanding where ever note is. For a beginner, memorizing is acceptable. At least you are trying to learn the notes. Here are a couple ideas, see if either work for you. Make a diagram of the fretboard. A drawing showing the strings and frets. Put in the fret markers to make it easy on yourself. Now write down the notes everywhere on the fretboard. The first time start with the low E string open and work your way down the neck. Then move to the A string and so on. Next time. make another diagram. This time start with the last fret of a string and work back down the neck to the open position. That is tougher.
Another idea. Make a set of flash cards showing a string and a fret. Make them for the open through 12th fret for each string. Each card is one location, such as low E string open or A string 5th fret. Shuffle your deck of cards. Now as you draw a card out of the deck, identify what note that location is.
